First of all, the sepia tone is simply devine in relation to the timeline in which his character resides. The vibrant brushstrokes in the background are illustrative of his rugged life, in dealing with the death of his parents, the immigration to America, and having to raise an infant daughter on his own. But the lighter it gets toward the top of the painting showcases his optimism for the opportunities that come with being an American--and he is very grateful for said opportunities.
Opportunities such as having a job! Although being an Italian immigrant in such a time, his labor was quite heavy as he worked in the construction industry and other dirty jobs no other American wanted. The roughness of his skin, the dark coal marks along the five o clock shadow, are all reminders of the challenges he faces in working such a hard job day in and day out with little time for rest (what with his infant child)--with which you work wonderfully with in terms of how you subtly bagged some shadow beneath his eyes to get that worn-out, beat down look/feel.
And I like the hat.
The suspenders are nice too.
