Description
I tried making a head reference for my OC Dunebug before, but had no plan and my head up my ass... trying to design in one pass sweeping across a page, and focusing more on a symmetrical drawing than having a design scheme. Frankly, the results were generic and disappointing. So scrap that-- here's the new design, more or less final. (I may add some more details to the sides and back.)This was a fine time for my markers and colored pencils to be lost amid the mess of my bedroom! The gray shaded areas are gun metal or gray; black is... well, black; the eye irises are beige; the goggle shield is smoky brown; and the other uncolored parts are bright red.
I wanted to use things people might not choose-- goodness knows how many OC designs are already out there, after all-- but not so odd he wouldn't blend in. I was watching the second season of G1 as I drew and I noticed some common head features could look more unique with just a little tweaking. Vents crest many heads, but the vanes inside are always horizontal. Likewise, there are frequently pods or plate projecting off the sides of the face, but few really seem to focus on going out from the face upward and forward. (A big breakthrough moment was when I decided to try and rotate the shapes from Optimus Prime's forward about 45 degrees.)
I wanted 'Bug to look like the needy, gangly puppy-dog he is-- his eyes had to be big and wide, his head like he's not a mech yet and is a bit stunted. Those black 'cheekbone' plates were a late addition, to allow more expressiveness and break up the simple structure some.
I remembered all the 'goatees' Gundams tend to have and tried a chin cap out, but my loose line made it way too big. I decided it still worked if I framed it to look like his head had aspects of a crash helmet. After all, he is a war 'cycle.
This head is easy to emote with and draw, except at angles that give me trouble with anything. The hardest part is keeping his 'horns' in proper perspective and at proper length. Considering that designing this one was a much more short and comfortable process than that 'Junior G1 Starscream' I had before, I'm extremely pleased.
Wait: he still looks like he might be related to Starscream... just the TFP one! Aw, well... they can't all look totally different.
Dunebug belongs to me. Transformers is (c) Hasbro and (c) Takara
