Description
Another shirt design for my dad. Here we have the Martians from H.G. Wells War of the Worlds fighting John Carter, Dejah Thoris and Tars Tarkas from Edgar Rice Burroughs "John Carter of Mars" series.
In Wells' novel, the Martian tripods are described as being almost organic-looking, with flexible steel legs, swiveling heads and large baskets on the back for holding prisoners. The Martians themselves are octopus-like beings-- shown here attacking John Carter and being defeated by Dejah Thoris. On Earth, they can't move very well, but it's suggested that they are fairly agile in the lighter atmosphere of Mars. In the lower right is a one of the Martians from George Pal's 1953 movie of the War of the Worlds.

What a beautiful War of the Worlds image you've made!
Got to be one of my favorites, mixing both the Barsoom series with HG Wells. I love it.

Thanks! I was actually partially inspired by one of the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen comics set on Mars that had Jon Carter going up against the octopus-martians, with assistance from Gulliver of Mars and the zorn from Out of the Silent Planet.

There's also a story in a book called War of the Worlds Global Dispatches that features John Carter fighting off the HG Wells Martians to prevent their full invasion Earth. It goes to explain why they only sent 10 Cylinders to Earth and abruptly stopped, thanks to the efforts of Carter
