just some fairly random caps of the background, mostly colour testing and the early form which had much more of a dirt road than the final image. Also, my attempts to transform a foetal blob into a coherent Nala. It took a lot of rough sketching and patience XDI eventually gave up taking progress caps of stuff because the whole image took about three days and tbh I was sick of it!

I presume you used a smudge tool for the ground blending?

Nope I just lay down the solid base colour, then use a semi-opaque, paintbrush to 'paint' on lighter and darker shades in much the same way you'd actually paint on a canvas. The semi-opaque nature of the painting naturally blends the colours together, and provides mid-tones which I also pick up and use
