Description
ETA: Updated version with highlighted noses and deeper shading.Snitter and Rowf from The Plague Dogs, movie versions. Apparently Snitter is black and white in the book. Anyway, this was a relatively quick piece, only a few hours - but been meaning to draw it for ages.
I love the way Rowf shows protectiveness towards Snitter throughout the film by licking the cut/scar on Snitter's head, it's really sweet. I didn't include any part of the cut here, though only a small portion would be visible at this angle, simply because I prefer to keep this slightly happier than the actual movie, or something.

My favourite movie. I adore it but... so damn sad. Much better than Watership Down, though I liked that one too. I prefer Richard Adams' original ending to the Plague Dogs book, though. Sad but realistic and touching.
Wonderful work!

May I ask what's the original ending?

They both die in the end, and the 'island' is a kind of heaven.

I also prefer the original ending of the novel, especially as Adams' only really added in the happier ending because he was told it was all too depressing otherwise. I'm really glad that the film keeps the sadder/ambiguous (but not really ambiguous because a song about dying plays over it) ending.

Yeah, though there are some who still believe the dogs live at the end because of the picture of the island after the credits. Obviously metaphorical but people can take it how they want. After all that happens to those poor dogs you do kind of wish for a happy ending.

Well, the island is real. It's the Isle of Man in real life, which they call the Isle of Dog. So I do think the ending has that little bit of ambiguity, which is fair enough. The question of whether two exhausted dogs could swim that far, who knows. Personally I think seeing the island (and I think they did really see it, which is why Rowf went from saying he couldn't see any island to saying he could) probably acted as a metaphor for them as they died, leading them to believe they really were going to doggy heaven. I don't think they survived.
I'd love to know what the deal with the ending of the book is. I get the impression, from the reading I've done, that Adams was recommended to include it. But I'd love to find out from the man himself.

Yeah, there is that ambiguity, though I think that the island Rowf saw was "heaven", as when Snitter went out to sea saying he saw an island, all he saw was the sun. But, yes, the ending is up for debate. Though actually seeing an island and not making it is even more tragic.
I believe when he first published the book in England, many Publishers tried to get him to change the ending, so when the American edition was published, he added that Deux Ex Machina ending. I think the European edition is still published with the original ending... I need to find a copy.

I've heard of British copies having the ending with certain chunks missing, but not with the saving of the dogs missing. I haven't actually been able to locate any copies without the happier ending in SOME form, which is a shame, as I'd love one. I also heard somewhere that in some copies the final segment is actually entitled 'Duex Ex Machina', which was Adams' statement against the ending he had been recommended to include. It's all very fascinating, I just wish there were contact details for Mr. Adams online to get in touch with him! He's quite old now though, so he probably wouldn't reply anyway.

Good! I'm really glad you enjoyed it, it's a great film and a lot of people are really put off by the heavy content.

That's weird. I reacently get to know the movie through Cracked and I want to see it badly, but I fear I might get depressed! I saw Watership Down a few weeks ago and loved it. I guess I might give this one a try, and have this pic as my happy alternate story version

ha! it is a very depressing movie, but it's very good too. if you genuinely dislike sad films, it may well be one to avoid.

Yep. For some reason I was convinced that was happened at the end was not actually going to happen. I don't want to post spoilers here. I had read up about the book, and the book has a happier ending because Richard Adams was told to make it less depressing. So I assumed the happier ending would be in the movie, and then it was like, *sad sad sad* ...... *end credits* WHATTTTTTTTT O_O

It's very similar to the movie, except for the happy addendum at the end, and it's even titled 'Deux Ex Machina' in some versions because Adams so blatently didn't want to include it haha. I'm reading it myself atm.

what does Deux Ex Machina mean?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Nollaig In reply to miudream [2012-05-15 09:07:41 +0000 UTC]
Sorry, Deus Ex Machina, spelt it wrong. Literally, it means 'God out of the machine', but what it refers to is when a seemingly impossible event happens to tie something up really nicely. For example, the ending of the book, whereby the dogs just happen to be picked up in a boat and Snitter's owner just happens to be alive and just happens to find out and take both dogs in. It's so unlikely that it blatently could not have happened, and Adams created an entire new chapter to write it, so he was basically mocking the fact that people wanted him to give it a happy ending when there was quite obviously no way for there to be a happy ending.

No worries. It's an absolutely stupid ending for people who can't accept a book being sad, and should never have been written. And it is most DEFINITELY not worth reading the book just to get to.
