Description At last, here by popular demand and just in time for Hallowe'en, the wing tutorial!

I'm sooo very sorry this has taken me FOREVER to finish. I'm not really that good at making tutorials, and I hope it's not totally confusing.
Please try and ignore all the typos and spelling mistakes.

If it really doesn't make sense, let me know and I'll do my best to fix it.

Again sorry for it taking forever. My apologies.

Does the material have to be stretchy? I'm wondering if I can still make this with a cotton based fabric.

This is a great tutorial! I really want to try it for a cosplay I intend to doing.
But sadly I don't have access to a hot glue gun.

How did you fasten this to yourself? I'm trying to figure out a way to make a non-bulky harness or at least figure out how to attach it to myself so that it won't fall off or anything with ribbon or something along those lines.

nolwen In reply to HinamoriMomo98 [2010-08-02 02:44:40 +0000 UTC]

The wings are too large and heavy to just use ribbon or something too thin. I made a pretty hefty harness out of slightly stretchy fabric (don't use too stretchy) and then had four ties that the wings tied into. Then you can easily take the wings off without taking the costume off. You just need to make the costume so you can access the back (like my chorno costume).

Hope that helps

Do you do commissions? If so, how much would you charge to make two pairs of moogle wings? (they're small) I'd want each of them less than 7 inches long and have all the appropriate joints (as in just the shoulder/elbow/wrist/and at least three fingers. Like the shiny purple wings in the second finished products picture, but a lot smaller.)

Is it possible that you could do this for me? I've tried following your tutorial but i just can't seem to get it.

I'm so sorry this reply is super late. Your comment seemed to have gotten lost
Unfortunately I'm not taking commissions anymore, but I may be able to point you in the direction of someone you can make you the wings.

Do you think knit fabric would be a good idea? I'm trying to do ears for a Vaporeon hoodie, and this is the best technique I can find to do so.

nolwen In reply to vegetasgirlraiko [2010-04-02 14:26:34 +0000 UTC]

yeah knit should work just fine. I've used this technique with all sorts of fabrics from super stretchy to no stretch at all.

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but what kind of wire do you use/where do you get it from?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

nolwen In reply to sylphkeeper [2010-03-14 23:06:35 +0000 UTC]

It's just plain old steel wire you'd find in most hardware stores. You can usually get it by the roll too. I got mine for $16 five years ago and still have a ton left

Guh... Is it okay if I get down on my knees and worship the ground you walk on? I'm just wondering cause I have been stumped on a wing design for a costume for a while and now I find this absolutely amazing tutorial of yours... so yeah. Gonna go start a fanclub now. Expect the cookies to arrive soon, chocolate chip with extra chips good?

GlassNinja In reply to nolwen [2009-08-26 23:00:04 +0000 UTC]

My original plan was to just take the wire and wrap it in something then stick it to the fabric of the wing, but I found problems with it as the wire could bend and the fabric wouldn't move right, etc. I wish I knew why I never thought of sewing channels and sticking the wire in them. It's so simple it's genius. By having the wires right in the fabric, you can adjust tension, position, shape and so much more. Like the rabbit ears you get for easter. Now here are your cookies *presents a box* careful their hot, right out of the oven!
