Description
Sooo.... this took months. About 5 to be more precise. I severely underestimated the difficulty of backgrounds.... and my artistic pickiness. This is my first background for my visual novel. It is the dorm of Toivo and Apollo and lots of scenes happen in this room so it had to be good. The room is based of the one I had in college (except I didn't have a roommate) and I will not put any individual items in (at least until I am more... prepared with other backgrounds).
I am watermarking the piece because this is most amount of time I have ever spent on one piece and I need people NOT to steal it for their own games. They can of course contact me about use and we can talk about it...
Please Please PLEASE let me know what you think!!

This looks pretty good, anything that could be better will come with practice. ...lots and lots of practice...

Thanks, not really looking foreward to the practice tho.... can't imagine how much time similar ones are going to take....

Practice will make things go much faster, if nothing else.

Love it! If I lived here, I'd think about what to do with the space underneath my bed... Luggages?

Back in college I "borrowed" a couch from the lounge and stuck it under the bed. You couldn't sit fully upright, but it was a better place to watch TV than the actual bed. My Friends who had roommates put their mini fridge and microwave underneath. It was also fun to watch nonathletic freshmen try to jump onto them the first day (The bed is around Chest Height on me.... and I'm 5'6"). XD
They are great beds tho!

Sounds like fun XD Did the bed broke or the nonathletic freshmen 'broke'?
That's quite a high bed. Did you come across anyone who was bad with heights? They probably won't admit it though..
I can identify with you though, backgrounds are so much work!! Especially if you haven't done one before. All those individual, painful lines... Did you do this on photoshop with pen tool?

usually the freshmen would let a leg up, hover for a second, and then fall off. It was doubly bad for those with silk sheets.
Later it became a thing for those who had trouble to flip the bed upside down (so instead of a loft bed they had a four-poster. Others put the mattress under the bed and used the frame as a TV stand (usually after stealing one of the couches). Most in the dorms were not bad with heights, The building was 12 stories high and most of the dorm would go and party on the 2nd floor roof (it had an extension).
I think it is evil that backgrounds tend to take more work than the characters you are putting in them. The worst bit is it did not like the coloring bit... missed corners EVERYWHERE! I spend a good week going through bit by bit trying to fix it, but I am sure I missed some.
For what I used.... it was PaintTool SAI with a Wacom Bamboo Create Tablet.

Whoa you really have some interesting mates. Sounds like the work hard play hard kind.
Yes totally agree on backgrounds! Those missing bits of colour are pure EVIL! And the worst part is, most people notice your character designs rather than your background! Attempting VNs really make me appreciate background artists!
I've never used PaintTool SAI before. Have you used Photoshop? That's what I'm using and I notice a lot of people using PaintTool SAI.

Yeah... they are all dorks. ^_^
They notice when you background is bad tho so you HAVE to have a good BG anyways. it's a setup, i swear! XD
I have Photoshop CS5, though I don't use it very often. For me I find that there is too much I will never use and the stuff I do use is not easily accessible. Mostly I use PaintTool Sai and Manga Studio 5 because they are more streamline to what I want to use them for. SAI especially because it takes about five minutes to master and is really great for color pieces (also a new version is on its way out that is going to make it even better). Photoshop is good to have around tho because it is fancy and I can do filters and gradients much faster using it (so final adjustments and stuff). My Artist Penpal in Japan says that the modern artist should master at least 2 art softwares; Photoshop and what you use to actually create the work. lol.

Yep, need a good background. More recently I realised my character need to exist in the background. What I really mean is, if my character looks too detailed and my background looks too lazy (or the other way round), it looks REALLY weird!
I started off learning on Photoshop, and was thinking if I should learn another art software. That's mostly because I never really understood the value of other art software (wasn't motivated enough to try), but I'll give it a go one of these days

It is truly a vicious cycle of art.... that everyone is going to critique once completed. But as long as we, the creators, are happy then everyone else can deal. XD
If/When you do decided to try other art programs I suggest trying PaintTool SAI and Manga Maker, I suggest avoiding GIMP though because its just a free version of Photoshop and so not even really worth it if you have the real one.

Yep we'll have to be at peace with ourselves at some stage.
I will try PaintTool SAI and Manga Maker if Photoshop continues to slow down on me Thanks!

they do suck.... hundreds more details than just a couple of people... and its infinitely easier to screw up.

It looks really nice, you managed to get a really good atmosphere here! Good choices of patterns and textures! The shading on the beds looks great! However, the walls are a bit empty...but since it is a dorm, maybe students aren't allowed to put some posters and stuff?
Good luck for your game!

Thank You!!
As far as personal items for the dorm occupants, I got really sick of drawing this so they may or may not appear... Most dorms say no posters except on bulletboards tho..... but we will see. XD
And thank you for the luck!!
