what you mean with 'negative'shading? and on what places is it best to use?

it's like 'scraping back' the ink: you erase the black area --> white lines --> looks like 'negative shading'
you can shade 'normally' and leave the lighter area white or fill it with black then erase it a bit to give some lighter tones
