A collection of digital sketches and exercises I've been producing from June 2013 to April 2014, I think. More traditional sketchdumps on the wayΒ
I love drawing quick stuff without reference now and then. I don't usually encourage that, but I could spot many new weaknesses in my work that way.

Yeah, weaknesses! I'm happy you're so kind, but I'm afraid we're doomed to find new weaknesses in our art FOREVAH

You got some amazing brushwork and texture going on in these! You really nailed down the look of traditional painting in a lot of these which I feel like is a really difficult thing to learn how to do with digital. I especially love the stuff on here that you do from imagination (the blue reptillian/dragon, wowee o.o) just because, in general, I love your original work and you can tell by looking at it there's a lot of study reinforcing it, especially judging from all the studies surrounding it, haha. x) Do you use a regular plug-in tablet, or one with a screen (like a cintiq)?

Thank you! That means a lot, really Β
I wish I could produce more original work. I'm very anxious about committing to full illustrations and big projects, so I ease my guilt by making lots of studies xD
I've been using an old small Wacom Graphire 4 since... 2006? I've recently bought an Intuos pro (it has a little interface on the left that allows you to use shortcuts on there instead of having to reach for the keyboard - very handy!), but I tend to stay in the same place for no more than 10 days, so I'm still using the old one. It's sturdy and tiny and great for travels

What kind of tablet do you use? About cintiq tablets, I've heard mixed opinions. A lot of people told me the slight "distance" between pen and surface makes it awkward to use, especially because it's supposed to emulate a traditional support. We had two cintiqs for teachers at my academy, but neither of them liked working on those and eventually plugged them in like regular tablets. The cintiqs' drivers went down relatively often. Last but not least, my mother, who is a physiotherapist, told me I really shouldn't be working with my arm in suspension - which I guess is bound to happen, at least on a big cintiq.Β
I was very tempted at first, but now I'm not sure I'd want to use a cintiq for everyday work

I've finally started painting practices for set amounts of time and I only hope to eventually get this good! xD

I cringe when I see these, but thank you, I'm glad you think so!Β
Have fun on your painting practices, they're very useful - aaand they're pretty relaxing. You know you're gonna be done in 20 minutes and you won't need to touch them again

Ha! Yeah that sounds like the best part xD

In all honestly though I think these pieces are all stunning 'because' of whatever slight flaw they may have. It seems to make them endearing C:

The details in those 20 minute paintings are amazing! Also by no color picking, do you mean no eyedropper was used on the references at all?Β *o*Β

nondev In reply to Eledora [2014-08-22 07:54:49 +0000 UTC]

Thank you so much! Yup, I try not to use the eyedropper tool when I do those. Try it if you're interested! It helped me a lot in "recognizing" color and managing its relativity Β

It's the megahorn beast thing! I remember that guy. So fierce. So majestic. So fluffy!

Beautiful stuff there, Dev. (:

Yep, that's him! I was just having fun so I didn't look at the reference sheet back then - I guess his proportions are a little off. But I'll draw more of that beast in the future

Man these are good. You capture so much life and energy with so few strokes. Everything feels natural.

Those clouds are probably my favorite, because clouds. You've got me inspired to do some studies tonight!

Thank you so much!Β
I'm really bad at clouds, and I needed to understand them a bit more. Not sure if those few exercises are enough for now
But yesss - they're so relaxing to paint. Have fun with your studies!
