It's a referencing the idea of "breaking the third wall." I debated saying the 4th wall, but I've heard the fourth wall has to do with theatre and not comics....

Bah. I'll change it.

First I want to say, I love the art... it is fantastic!

To address the "Fourth Wall", while it is often used for narration in theatre, movies and comics, even literature, it is really a device where the narrator or storyteller acknowledges and addresses the existence of the audience as a third party "viewing" or "witnessing" events.

Imagine that you are going through your daily life, and suddenly at the end of your day you bump into someone...  Throughout the day you hadn't noticed they'd been following you, watching, observing, but now that it has been brought to your attention, you realize in your subconscious mind they've been there all day, witness to everything you've experienced.  The next day, they are there again, but rather than ignore them and go about your daily life you actually address them from time to time to give them insight into your actions, explanations for your actions and sometimes even asking them for advice, though never expecting any real response because you understand that this is YOUR story.  This is breaking the "fourth wall".  Deadpool does this regularly in his comic.  Even characters from Shakespeare have at times broken the fourth wall, addressing the audience directly.  A Midsummer Night's Dream and Hamlet come to mind.

While I have to admit, breaking panels is equally effective for dynamic characters!
