Description I really don't have any excuse for how little I've updated... I'm really really sorry....

Digital sketch of Fenris and Danarius. Not a pairing I like, but it lends to some worthwhile compositions. (Was thinking of how Bond villains always have those fluffy white-hair cats... Danarius just has a fluffy white-hair elf.) Still not really used to working digitally, but all my traditional media stuff is packed up.

Sort of goes with a fanfic I've been updating on my (occasionally NSFW) Tumblr which expands on the Act III conversation between Hawke's party and Danarius. (I'm "caiterhe" on Tumblr as well.)

Opencanvas/digital media.

Thanks in advance !Β

yeah, Fenris was probably made to do some things he didn't necessarily want to. i've been trying to rationalize why Fenris is bisexual for a very long time and, well, since i didn't write him it's not my call to make. I prefer him strictly hetero, of course, why wouldn't I? But... if a guy is nice, ... it just leaves that open territory. Kaytara is right in that the dialog with him confronting Danarius is not really any kind of confirmation. But. The artwork is very good.

You know, I didn't know it was supposed to be Danarius until I read the description. Not showing his face is a bonus, because I can PRETEND THAT IT'S HAWKE INSTEAD

LOL I love how you draw Fenris. He looks perfect every time.

Thanks, I appreciate that! I know I draw Fenris a little differently than most people, but as long as he's recognizable I guess it's okay?

And yeah, go ahead and pretend it's Hawke, haha! Those robes are pretty generic~.

Maker, this was hard to find... Here you go: [link]

Also, when you go meet Varania and Hawke say "we can negotiate", Fenris is pissed off and than Danarius reminds him how he once had an affection for him. There's a hint even even if you choose "He's not a slave" - "Do I hear a note of jealousy? The lad is rather skilled, isn't he?"
Danarius is a blood mage and he can control his slaves and do whatever he want with them. Most of the other magisters are probably just the same, and elves - well, you have seen how they are treated like.

The sereneness on Fenris's face is so sweet. Its like my headcannon of Fenris and Danarius's more intimate past (before it went sour) in visual form. So cuuuuuuute. My favorite Fenris pairing. +fav

I remember when choosing different dialogues options about Danarius saying that Fenris had some "affection" for Danarius (before he realized that his slave life was not a real life with the Frog Warriors). This pic can portray this quite well, I think.

Good job, as usual!

notationn In reply to DragonsFeather [2011-08-15 03:23:22 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! Yep, I think it's fair to show Fenris like this... you don't have to know right away something is wrong. He learned it and that's impressive enough in its own right!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

DragonsFeather In reply to notationn [2011-08-15 10:00:56 +0000 UTC]

Yup, indeed. I was a bit horrified when I learned that something did happen with Danarius, but as we're not sure what exactly AND that Fenris knew nothing about what a somewhat "normal" life was like... this scene could have very likely happened, at that time. Poor lad.

rennad23 [2011-08-14 03:20:15 +0000 UTC]

Absolutely beautiful. Per usual.

About your comment: "I try to make it happy, too. Sad-happy. It's... a thing! Kind of! Maybe happiness with an acknowledgement of tragedy? Not sure...." I agree. I see Fenris' expression as genuinely content, with an aura of threat visible only to the audience. The whole picture gives me the sense that this takes place long before Saheron and Fenris' epiphany with the fog warriors--perhaps sometime after the lyrium was engraved into his skin. Learning to deal with the pain, learning to use his new abilities, had to be tiring and taxing. And Danarius, in my mind at least, strikes me as the perfect manipulative bastard that would play on Fenris' vulnerabilities. Praise him, pet him, convince him it was all for the best.

Which makes Fenris soon-to-come realizations all the more brutal. But that's just my opinion ^ ^

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

notationn In reply to rennad23 [2011-08-19 04:35:13 +0000 UTC]

I agree with all of this, definitely. I figure Danarius strongly abused Fenris' vulnerability post-lyrium-markings. That isn't to imply that Fenris is a weak person; given his restricted reference frame and his personal circumstances, it's perfectly understandable that he wouldn't have objected to his treatment from day one. A horrible realization indeed... a terrible betrayal of trust. That's one reason I don't begrudge him his... intensity.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

rennad23 In reply to notationn [2011-08-19 05:20:54 +0000 UTC]

Nor I. Fenris' intensity, his vehement protesting against magic, is part of what makes him a surprisingly complex character (granted, it takes some reading between the lines and some imagination). It makes me yearn to know more about what Danarius did to him. Physical abuse doesn't seem enough to make him despise magic the way he does. But mental or emotional abuse, manipulation of his affection and trust, that's more than enough.

Which is why I like Fenris so much, and your interpretations of him. You capture that spirit, that agony, so well.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

notationn In reply to rennad23 [2011-08-21 01:52:53 +0000 UTC]

I agree, and there are some aspects beyond physical abuse that are explicitly canon. For example, his being forced to wear a leash and his being forced to kill the Fog Warriors. (The latter might not initially seem like evidence, but since the Fog Warriors were enemies of the qunari establishment, as is the Tevinter Imperium, logically Danarius--as a Tevinter magister--would have let them be unless he had a separate motive.) Furthermore, Gaider has clarified that there was a sexual angle to it as well, which I honestly thought was clear from the game, but I guess there was some ambiguity. When you start considering all these different facets, Fenris' hate comes across as uncomfortably reasonable. Now, if you're playing a mage, you might think otherwise, but the issue of magic deserves to be seen from Fenris' vantage as well. Honestly, I think it says a lot about him that he'll befriend and/or romance a mage Hawke. I get the impression he's willing to give people a chance, but to tell you the truth, he doesn't get a lot of evidence that might undermine his general opinion. I somewhat blame Kirkwall for that though--the Codex makes it clear that it's a major outlier for blood magic.

rennad23 In reply to notationn [2011-08-28 10:55:07 +0000 UTC]

I admit that I don't pay attention to what the writers have said about their characters and the story after-the-fact. But I thought the sexual overtones were rather obvious to me as well. That, coupled with everything else, makes for a unique character and his unique perspective. You may not like Fenris but his reactions make sense for what he's suffered.

It makes me wonder why so many people hate Fenris as a character? Or Anders for that matter. Isabella. Merril.. If there is one thing I can praise Bioware for, it's usually making very unique and complex characters. Or at the very least characters who become complex with interpretation and discussion.

Oh Kirkwall... I always wanted there to be an option where I argue with Anders about just how many insane blood mages there are in Kirkwall.

I really like this.

I'm struggling horribly with how to characterise Fenris in my fic - on the one hand there's the Fenris that Hawke romances, who is all damaged and doesn't want to be touched and can't handle even a one-night stand, but then there's the Fenris who fucks Isabela in every direction possible (come on, you'd have to work pretty hard to impress 'Bela surely). I can feel a handwave coming on...

Your interpretation makes sense if you go by the Hawke-romancing damaged version. Also yours makes me a bit weepy.

You still haven't explained β€œFor the laganum? For β€˜Pompam Leonum’?”... I can guess at the intent, of course (and I just looked up "laganum" - LOL) but you SAID you'd spell it out!
