Description
This is a special person in my life. His favorite color is green. His favorite sport is soccer, and his favorite music is found on the Guitar Hero games. Like a lot of kids, he goes to school, and his favorite subject is reading. He loves swimming, computer games, and eating. He likes to dress up as Spider Man for Halloween, and wishes he could be Spider Man in real life. He has his own likes, dislikes, talents, and quirks. He breathes air, his heart beats, his mind thinks, and he has feelings. Oh yeah, by the way, he has autism, but really heβs just another human like you and me, and loves to be treated as one."If a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer. Let him step to the music he hears, however measured or far away." - Henry David Thoreau
Faves, features, comments, and watches are always welcome and extremely appreciated. Thank you for any support in advance (although I will try to thank you personally, sometimes life gets in the way)! If you use this picture, please send a link!
Update: To answer a frequent question I'm seeing: Yes, I am sharing with him his feedback, and no, he didn't technically write the text himself, but he did to the best of his ability, so he deserves the credit. In my opinion, yes he wrote it and deserves the credit because he did his very best and that's all anyone can do.

i guess it just smacks of exploitation to me, even if it is some form of self exploitation.

I love the spirit this image portrays. That just because a person has any disability, it doesn't make them any less of a person. So what indeed. And adorable kid!

<3 Very lovely. *faves for a million*
A cousin of mine has autism. I really hate it if someone teases him in a bad way, or mocks him because of how he acts. They see him as abnormal. But hey, he's not. He's a living and breathing human being who has talents, likes, dislikes, hopes and dreams. He makes me laugh when I'm sad, and makes me look on things in a brightly different way. I love him for that.
This photo represents him so well. Thank you for sharing this. It warmed my heart. Everyone with autism is to be loved. <3 and the same goes to your deviation.

One in about 100 kids are diagnosed with autism. My room mate's amazing little boy is one of them. And you are wholly right. He's still a kid and as such, should be accepted like any other. This picture is amazing.

I hope that you tell him, that I said that I wish there were more people like him on here. He's adorable and brave, and I hope that he is living a happy life, especially with an awesome sibling such as yourself to stick up for him <3 I love seeing kids being happy, especially those that are special. We call them special for a reason, because to those that care and understand, its those kids and adults that make up an important part of a family's lives and changes the lives of others. I love them. Thank you so much for sharing, it's a BEAUTIFUL picture and he's such a beautiful child. You're lucky <3 and the both of you deserve this DD

Ya know I say the same thing every time I hear some one put a person with autism down or any form of special needs at that. They are people and all they want is to be treated like a human being. They are people they have feelings and have a beating heart and are not any different than you or me. Some times I have have to be so blunt and rude to get my point across to make those are are being mean and rude to shut up and listen and then they start to feel bad at their own words and what they have done.
I work at a riding center for the special needs and I LOVE every moment of it, personaly I think people with autism are so cool. I have learned more from them than I have learned from a school teacher.
I think this picture is sooo cute and is just plain awsomeness and Green is such a cool color lol it is a color of life

I love this- I love the way you describe him & agree many tend to treat/look/feel different around them. That's one of the most saddening things on this planet, humans not treating those of their own kind equally because they're different- but aren't we all. That's what makes humanity unique, amazing & incomparable to any other thing that has ever been created.

I have to say one of the first things I noticed was he has really really big hands! Is that just the foreshortening, or does autism cause some physical things too?
Anyways, well deserved DD What a beautiful soul.

Here's something to make you think - I have autism. My IQ is ten points above "genius" and it has allowed me to create both colorful literature and art. A lot of people treat me like trash without knowing me because of it, But the friends I make are the most wonderful people in the world because it lets me know how to choose the best. Maybe you shouldn't be so quick to shy away from the people moaning in wheelchairs, or sidestepping and holding the hands of a neurotypical. I support the movement for equal, but still beneficial treatment of those unable to communicate completely. I just hope this gave you an idea of what some of us have in store for the world if you let us.

nothingbuteverything In reply to FS-XXVII [2010-05-27 02:31:58 +0000 UTC]
thanks this did make me think a little. now let me tell you a little about myself, if you don't mind. I support the same thing you do. If someone needs a little bit of extra beneficial treatment, then they completely 100% deserve it, and should get it. That's actually what I do with my life (saying it's a job makes it seem like I just get paid to do it, but I actually love it).
This picture isn't actually all about equality, but is more about a simpler thing. The picture was more or less, just to remind people that we are human beings, every one of us. The first thing that I learned when I first started "working" was to first view every single individual as a human, no matter what disability (or lack there of) they may have (or not have). that's basically what this is trying to say. That no matter what "labels" a person may fall under, no matter their differences or similarities, they're a human. I'm sure that you have some great friends
(sorry if that was a little bit rambling!)

FS-XXVII In reply to nothingbuteverything [2010-05-27 03:02:22 +0000 UTC]
Yes, I understand. It was really an "all-directed" message, just something that opens up that locked box in everyone.
Each individual should indeed be treated as a human.
