Description
This is a special person in my life. His favorite color is green. His favorite sport is soccer, and his favorite music is found on the Guitar Hero games. Like a lot of kids, he goes to school, and his favorite subject is reading. He loves swimming, computer games, and eating. He likes to dress up as Spider Man for Halloween, and wishes he could be Spider Man in real life. He has his own likes, dislikes, talents, and quirks. He breathes air, his heart beats, his mind thinks, and he has feelings. Oh yeah, by the way, he has autism, but really heβs just another human like you and me, and loves to be treated as one."If a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer. Let him step to the music he hears, however measured or far away." - Henry David Thoreau
Faves, features, comments, and watches are always welcome and extremely appreciated. Thank you for any support in advance (although I will try to thank you personally, sometimes life gets in the way)! If you use this picture, please send a link!
Update: To answer a frequent question I'm seeing: Yes, I am sharing with him his feedback, and no, he didn't technically write the text himself, but he did to the best of his ability, so he deserves the credit. In my opinion, yes he wrote it and deserves the credit because he did his very best and that's all anyone can do.

What a delightful perspective on us strange folk. It definitely catered to this individual's personal whims in an atypical fashion.
I must say, while I do not suffer as harsh as this young man as I'm HFA (High-functioning Autism), I can agree with him on many of the pressures the young fella suffers, of which I too also experienced in my youth. Definitely the oddball of school, I was stricken with being socially inept and just incapable of understanding the kids around me. Teachers were also just utterly confused at times at my strange yet intellectual conjectures and wild behavioral differences, all of which they of course attributed to ADHD (which while I have ADD, it was not the cause of any of my behaviors aforementioned). The problem with me is that while I did suffer autistic tendencies in some areas (and still do) such as speech and social interaction, they aren't nearly as extreme as a low-functioning autistic, so I was often misdiagnosed with other menial disorders, never realizing what was actually taking place.
So here I am, a fella that loves to blurt random noises like that of Michael Winslow, can never seem to keep a straight face, and always seems to misinterpret people and people misinterpret me. I am utterly compassionate yet paradoxically indifferent, constructive yet ironically hysterical. I cross my legs standing in a way that leaves people befuddled, walk on my toes all the time like a raptor and utilize my limbs in the most unorthodox manner. Ultimately, I'm just a loon, though some people think I'm a genius (?). Yet I'm glad that God has brought in my life people who look beyond that first impression - which is as bitter as wormwood - and delight in the substance - which is as sweet as nectar.
In any case, hats off to this fella, as I am sure he will eventually realize that being an autistic lad is a unique, strange yet gratifying experience. I myself am sometimes appalled by my limitations that my autism brings me, as some of the most simplest tasks others take for granted I accomplish with severe exhaustion or near impossibility. However I look past them and savor the vibrant color that autism brings into life, of which I feel I would go mad should I not live another minute of it

Sometimes the sentiment behind a piece makes it all the more special
My brother has Cerebral Palsy. He can't walk or talk but he has so many special qualities that make him a much better human being. He loves colouring, magazines and his collection of audio cassettes. He has been my inspiration throughout my life. He turned 28 recently. I him to bits!
I can totally relate with you

My brother has autism. I love him to bits. He has his tantrums and his quirks and he frustrates the hell out of me but I don't think of him any different. Spiderman was his first favorite superhero and would dress up as him all the time (until his costume stopped fitting). Congrats on the DD. I think is touching and very beautiful

this is exactly how i feel about my autism, i just never think about it and usualy forget i have it. my mum however seems to think that whenever i forget to to something, i'm just using that as an excuse to not do it.

Okay, flat out. . .I love this! And it's so true--I had an autistic friend in high school. It was sad--we were the only people he could talk to because no one else would; they all thought he was too annoying or too this or too that, it drove me crazy!

its good to see something like this. it pisses me off when people treat those with autism differently. With my little brother being autistic, seeing any treatment that makes them seem different just saddens me. He's a genius, but everyone treats him like he is still 2. I just wish this message could get out to more people...

This is a great photo... it's cute and has an excellent attitude to it on the one hand, while also touching on a serious subject (and social issue) on the other. With Autism rates at all-time highs, so many kids are receiving labels... and along with the labels, expectations and stereotypes that quite often separate them from the rest of their peers---and, also quite often, unnecessarily.
Great image, great message.

Aww he's so adorable and he's so happy looking! I knew a boy my age who has autism, he's such a sweet kid too and really smart with geography. A lot of people would refuse to be his partner in history class, but my friends and I were always his partner and he would joke around and be all chipper about it all. Autistic children can be so sweet. AND I give you a thumbs up on this picture! >w<

you know, despite the text, "I have autism, so what?", the whole point of this photograph seems to be to emphasize the fact that he has autism.
π: 0 β©: 1
Celeb In reply to FerdinandTheElephant [2010-05-27 04:25:04 +0000 UTC]
I hope this doesn't come as an unwelcome reply (since I'm not the photographer)...
But I don't think the point of the image is to somehow not emphasize that this boy has autism, but to show that despite that fact, he's a human being, a person, just like everyone else, who has likes/dislikes and an individual personality and life.
Sadly, with the way people are and life is, I don't really think there's a way to not deal with or bring forward the fact that a person has autism. It's all in what you do with that fact.
