Description This is a special person in my life. His favorite color is green. His favorite sport is soccer, and his favorite music is found on the Guitar Hero games. Like a lot of kids, he goes to school, and his favorite subject is reading. He loves swimming, computer games, and eating. He likes to dress up as Spider Man for Halloween, and wishes he could be Spider Man in real life. He has his own likes, dislikes, talents, and quirks. He breathes air, his heart beats, his mind thinks, and he has feelings. Oh yeah, by the way, he has autism, but really he’s just another human like you and me, and loves to be treated as one.

"If a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer. Let him step to the music he hears, however measured or far away." - Henry David Thoreau

Faves, features, comments, and watches are always welcome and extremely appreciated. Thank you for any support in advance (although I will try to thank you personally, sometimes life gets in the way)! If you use this picture, please send a link!

Update: To answer a frequent question I'm seeing: Yes, I am sharing with him his feedback, and no, he didn't technically write the text himself, but he did to the best of his ability, so he deserves the credit. In my opinion, yes he wrote it and deserves the credit because he did his very best and that's all anyone can do.

Excellent point, I happen to have Autism as well. I tend to tell people that nobody is "normal", as normal is only a theoretical state of being.

Congrats on the DD!

As someone who has Asperger's, and also has an autistic and deaf cousin, I'd like to say that I absolutely ADORE this. I'm sure if I showed it to pretty much anyone in my family (especially my aunt) they'd love it too.

Thank you so much.

My brother has mental retardation and that's why i'm so sensitive about this.
I feel the same way. They are normal people just like everyone else. Even better, 'cause they will never hurt anyone.

The message that passes is so important, and i'm glad you got so many positive feedbacks.

Good job

I am a personal care provider and a job coach for a young woman with autism and I've worked with her and played and hung out with her for two years and it is amazing how unique she is in vision, in qualities, it's so amazing. And I'm sure you feel the same.

Autism of someone we love can be a hard thing to live with, but the milestones and the special moments you share with that person just seem that much more so augmented because they generally have to try harder.

This is a beautiful piece, and my friend and her parents who've worked so very hard with her, will love hearing about this piece.

this well deserved it's DD! my boyfriend has a learning disability called semantic pragmatic disorder. until you really get to know him, he won't tell you but you can't guess just by looking! it has parts of every other type of disorder i can think of;

-from dyslexia, trouble with maths and literacy
-from ADHD, troubles balancing emotions
-from autism, he has trouble expressing himself to others at times and can't tell if something is a joke

although he is, without a doubt the most caring, honest, genuine and understanding person i have EVER known, people only put him down for his quick reactivity and his so called 'teachers' are telling him he can't possibly pass his college course with this disorder if he doesn't ask for help. they don't seem to realise that he doesn't need OR want help unless he's REALLY struggling (like '1 day before the maths exam and i don't have a clue what ANY of these things mean' sort of stuggling, then he'll ask friends and family for advice). he was beaten black and blue in 'lord wilson'; the school for people with disabilities and disorders, almost been KILLED in catering because people were obssessed with trying to shove nuts down his throat just to see him take adrenalin (didn't i mention, he has a nut allergy?) and because everything bad thats happened has been blamed instantly on him, even some 6 year old little git burning his house down, he has no confience, no self-esteem and no self-respect. it's a rare disorder too; only 8 other people in our college of about 5,000 (i think thats how many people go here...) have that disorder and i had never heard of it until he told me.

the cherry on the top of the cake is that he does more than any of us 'ordinary' people in the college; he pretty much the glue that holds everyone together, and ultimatly their rock. but i'm the only one who seems to appreaciate this! others keep saying 'your going to die' whenever he skates, acting like he knows nothing even though he knows what hes talking about AND turns out to be right and he was locked away in his room his entire childhood 'for his own good'. i've been trying to make his life better and been doing things on his behalf whether or not he wanted me to, but other people are dragging him to his absolute limit.

i've had to stop him from killing himself, thanks to his sister! and i'm still trying to help drive away his negativity. but he was forced to grow up way before his time and now just sees himself as other peoples slave.

sorry for the long winded comment, but i'm just so happy to find out there are other people out there who look pass lable, looks and disabilities. i hope your brother has a better life than wolfie did and PLEASE for your brothers sake DO NOT send him to a secondry school for childeren with disorders. it will only harm him more than others ignorance ever could!

That is so touching. As long as people like you exist, there is still love in this world.

I was on a school for the disordered in my first school year. I am so very glad I got out of it before it was too late.

My best wishes to your boyfriend and you, I hope everything works out for you.

I'm so sorry your man has been through such hell... as well as in a 'special' school, after being locked in a room? Blimey. Ok, I was 'hidden' away when my parents had visitors, but not locked in a room.

I so agree with you about special schools. When I was a kid, everyone wanted me to go to one of those special schools for retarded kids, but my mum would have none of it. Thank God, because although I was diagnosed with autism at 12 months (in 1969),showed all the signs of mental retardation well into my seventh year, and stayed down a year, I ended up doing well. I'm teaching at uni in Korea now.

Your boyfriend is so fortunate to have you in his life. God bless you both.

This is really a fantastic piece. As someone who has been diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome myself, I think the message being conveyed here is a truly uplifting one. Too often it's easy for us to be bogged down by our differences, and allow them to become stumbling blocks against understanding and acceptance of each other-- or, from the perspective of the person with the differences, they can seem like insurmountable obstacles creating a permanent disconnect with everyone else. It's great to see such an optimistic take on the issue; it's really important to learn to appreciate ourselves and each other precisely for our diversity.
