Description
This is a special person in my life. His favorite color is green. His favorite sport is soccer, and his favorite music is found on the Guitar Hero games. Like a lot of kids, he goes to school, and his favorite subject is reading. He loves swimming, computer games, and eating. He likes to dress up as Spider Man for Halloween, and wishes he could be Spider Man in real life. He has his own likes, dislikes, talents, and quirks. He breathes air, his heart beats, his mind thinks, and he has feelings. Oh yeah, by the way, he has autism, but really heβs just another human like you and me, and loves to be treated as one."If a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer. Let him step to the music he hears, however measured or far away." - Henry David Thoreau
Faves, features, comments, and watches are always welcome and extremely appreciated. Thank you for any support in advance (although I will try to thank you personally, sometimes life gets in the way)! If you use this picture, please send a link!
Update: To answer a frequent question I'm seeing: Yes, I am sharing with him his feedback, and no, he didn't technically write the text himself, but he did to the best of his ability, so he deserves the credit. In my opinion, yes he wrote it and deserves the credit because he did his very best and that's all anyone can do.

This made me start crying... I love children so much, and my little brother (now age 5) also has autism. I live in a house with my mother, her boyfriend, my older brother, my "step sister", my younger brother, and myself.
My mother is always working, my older brother locks himself in his room, my "stepsister" always picks on him, and blames him for everything, when we have bedbugs because of her friend, and we've had head lice because of her friend. Her father always yells at my little brother, my little brother's father lives up in Maine (we moved to Florida a year ago), and I've been raising him like my own son since he was born five years ago, and guess what, I'm only fifteen.
He's grown so tall, and he's getting bigger, but all the kids at school make fun of him. When my mother gets home she yells at me for everything wrong I do, when the worst I've done is tell him not to swear like the kids on his bus do.
I hope that your "special someone" knows that no matter how tough it gets he'll always have friends and people who love him. I can't explain that to my little brother quite yet, he doesn't understand, but there's always hope. And trust me, they're as genuine human as any one of us.
With love,
Arressa Marie G.

You're a remarkable sister, it's too bad the rest of your family is so dysfunctional, and the kids at school are so mean. That step father and sister need to be taught a lesson. He knows you love him, he just can't show he knows.

my brother is also disabled and is literally my entire world, and this picture made me extremely happy, along with your journal entry pertaining to it. it comforts me to know that there are other older sisters out there who appreciate their disabled siblings as much as i do. <3 you're a great person, and he's absolutely adorable.

I love this photo and the message. My brother has Autism and is older than me, we had heaps of fun when I was growing up, we'd always play games involving the imagination like most kids. The years have passed, he's now in his late twenties and I'm 17. He's matured, but of course he's still his usual self, having an obsession with games and games consoles
People don't always understand when he's in a shop or out in public and behaves the way he does, they either laugh or stare. It used to really irritate me, but I've now gotten used to it. He, and other people with disabilities should be treated with the same respect as any other person.

My little brother has autism too, and when he was younger he was spider-man for halloween and wanted to be spiderman as well. Now he wants to be a wrestler. Thank you for this!

What a heart warming picture. Who said autistics can't communicate?
Aww...he's so cute. He'd love Ireland. All that green. Tell him it rains 289 days per year over there, that's why it's called the Emerald Isle. But then, he prolly already knows that.
Spiderman, eh? Me, I used to dream of being the Bionic Woman (really popular in the 1970s!), used to pretend I was the Bionic Woman, and then got obsessed with Doctor Who (still am!). Does he like spiders?
I was the kid who rescued the spiders from the house when my brothers weren't around. Those big fat Huntsmans with their hairy legs. And lizards. I collected lizards as a kid. Love lizards. My family thought I was crazy, girls aren't supposed to like getting all dirty hunting all over the yard for lizards, or imitating frogs, for that matter. Converted my younger brother to lizards, too, so it weren't a lost cause, haha. Oh, yeah, and handled a snake or two, too. Love reptiles. Dinosaurs. Does he? Bet he does!
I'm a diagnosed autistic from the dark ages (1969, I was 12 months), when people dinna even know what it was. My mum had a fantastic doctor, who had me do all sorts of special excercises and speech therapy, until I was thirteen. But the person who brought me out of my world to your world was my granny, who had the patience and understanding that would enable me to learn the alphabet and read, and who taught me 'night', not 'dark'; the meaning and richness of words.
He's so lucky to have been adopted by you and your family, and no doubt this cute munchkin has blessed you a thousand crazy ways, so you'll never lose the child in you. It's people like you, who bring light into the often confusing, terrifying, and illogical world.
Oh, and I just LOVE that saying from Thoreau!

If I was allowed one word, it would be AMAZING!
If I were allowed a few more, I would say he is undeniably a great human being. Through volunteer work I have found that those with disabilities are endowed with the purest and kindest emotions. It didn't matter how bad my day was - or theirs' for that matter - they would still make a point to stop and make sure I was "goot".
You two are both incredibly gifted ^_^

Amen! I can't really relate, but I sort of do, I was diagnosed with high function autism when I was little, and after I found out what autism ment I decided that it made sense, I mean, 'high function autism' and 'autism' are on two totally different levels, I can interact with people and talk to them and no-one would guess, but there's a real strain, just talking to someone that's there with words is, well, awkward for me, I have a great vocabulary, but when I'm talking to someone I just use short sentences and hope that what I said made sense, not to mention the whole idea of looking someone in the eye while talking to them has always been a bit much for me, it's just so awkward, though I think my drama class is helping me with that, just what I've typed here is way more than I could ever just say to someone, it's a lot easier to type than it is to speak. Anyways, back to my point, so I have a little trouble comunicating with people, it's like I'm in a room thats all closed up, and the people I'm talking to are outside and I have to look out what openings there are to talk to them, and it's just not fair because it aseems to me that they can walk out of their rooms, but I know that compared to people who have serios autism I have it easy, so kudos to your little green shirted one, may he find many good venues with which to express himself.
