Description
Ovelle is a commission for !I've admired Mantibabs as a species for a while now, and as my plush skills have evolved over time, I thought that plushing one would be a great challenge and a change from what I've made in the past. They have such unique anatomy and always varied markings and colors! When Shinto came to me with Ovelle, I knew I had to plush her! Her colors and markings are just fabulous and provided fun and exciting technical challenges to overcome.
I really put my heart and soul into her form and details, and I'm overjoyed with how she looks. She's definitely my greatest plush accomplishment so far and I'm super proud of her, something that as an artist who's constantly critical of herself, I very rarely get to feel, haha.
For the specs:
Ovelle isΒ 17" tall at the top of her head (not including her horns).
She is made out of white, azure, pumpkin, orange, electric blue, pink, and rust minky.
She has poly pellets in her feet to weight her a little, and many of her details (eyes, blue spots, eyebrow) are machine embroidered.
I was struck with the idea to make a quick turnaround GIF (probably from too much 3D modelling for school) so I figured I'd link it here!
Ovelle Turnaround
If you have any other questions about my process, feel free to ask!
Please do not ask for prices/quotes in comments as I prefer to keep records in notes.
Mantibabs are a closed species by PhloxeButt !
Ovelle belongs to Shinkei-Shinto .
I believe her design was originally by roialty .

I suggest this tutorial to start So you want to make plushies? A beginner's guide
And then any beginner's pattern to get the hang of it. Nazegoreng has a video tutorial on almost anything plush related you can imagine via gumroad. gumroad.com/nazegoreng
It's mostly trial and error, but having some knowledge upfront can save you lots of time!

Hey there. This is not my character, so I'm not sure if Shinkei-Shinto has given you permission to model their character.
Mantibabs are also a closed species, so you should probably credit PhloxeButt in the comments.

ThankΒ you! She was completed slowly over months, but if I was working every day, I'd say she was like a 5-6 day project!

that's incredible. I've only ever done one small plush, and the dog got it it :/ Β I've been inspired recently into making another though. However, I had to make my own pattern and I'm not sure if it works completely.Β
I dunno. I just like seeing all the amazing things people can do

Hey question;
are the ears on this baby stuffed? Or wired ? How are they standing up like that x3 I can't for the life of me get mine to stand like that

NoxxPlush In reply to PanFluffbutt [2015-11-19 01:30:44 +0000 UTC]
The secret is a few layers of quilt batting sewn in! It helps give form to pieces that need a little stuffing but that you want to stay flat at the same time. c:

Thank you! I worked on it over a few months between schoolwork, but it's about a solid week's worth of plushing if I could work all day every day on it. c: Most of my other plushes are about 3-4 days worth in comparison.

Wow! The level of detail in this plush is astounding! I can't imagine how you could sew up a plush with these super complex markings! Very well done.
Also, can I ask some questions about the plush? Like how did you do the markings and such? I'm a fellow plushie maker myself (haven't done anything recently) and I'm always looking for tips and tricks that can help me in the future.

NoxxPlush In reply to FoxTone [2015-07-14 21:26:57 +0000 UTC]
Hey there! Thank you!
Sure! The orange/white is all appliqued first, then I designed the spots on the computer and then machine embroidered them on top of what I'd already sewn. (With careful hooping!)
The scars and such were hand-stitched on after the body was sewn and stuffed, though I could have done them before as well.

FoxTone In reply to NoxxPlush [2015-07-14 23:50:34 +0000 UTC]
Oh cool! I have a embroidered machine that was given to me because the other person never used it and I haven't gotten around to getting the necessary supplies and stuff... I need to though.Β
What do you mean by appliqued? Like how did you do that? What stitches and stuff did you use? I've done it once on a blue jay plush and I was using a zig zag stitch and just layered (using some glue and pins) the black fleece on the blue, to get the cool markings around the eyes.
Also how did you do the jagged edge on the mouth, it looks like it would be a pain? XDΒ
π: 0 β©: 1
NoxxPlush In reply to FoxTone [2015-07-15 01:30:05 +0000 UTC]
What you described is appliquΓ©. I sometimes do a zigzag stitch but on this plush I just did a straight stitch close to the edge. The zigzag is the white shape stitched onto the blue. C:

FoxTone In reply to NoxxPlush [2015-07-15 23:25:06 +0000 UTC]
Why did you choose to do a straight stitch? Just wondering.
π: 0 β©: 1
NoxxPlush In reply to FoxTone [2015-07-16 00:50:54 +0000 UTC]
I sometimes don't want a pronounced border between colors like the satin stitch makes. c: But I go back and forth on what my favorite method is, haha!

My gosh your work is amazing ! I wish I could start to learn sewing plushes too ! I have a little question , do you find eyes in markets or do you create them by yourself ? Β
π: 0 β©: 1
NoxxPlush In reply to MilieNugget [2015-05-14 13:00:29 +0000 UTC]
Aw, thank you! You definitely can learn to plush with no previous sewing experience! I started 3 years ago when I didn't know how to thread a needle or turn on a machine, haha. c:
My eyes are all machine embroidered ( I have a Brother SE 400 that switches from sewing to embroidery). I draw my designs in photoshop, then put them into PE Design 7 that makes them into a file for my machine.
I have on the rare occasion used those black beady safety eyes that you can get at craft and sewing stores, but I mostly embroider.
Β Thank you for the question! I'm always happy to answer things about techniques. c:

Goodness, this is such a beautiful work of art, your craftsmanship is truly admirable! This is the kind of work I strive to one day make. May I ask, are her toes separately sewn together pieces, or needle sculpted?
