Description EDIT: Wow, thank you so much for the DD! This project was an entire semester of work for me, and I'm so pleased that it's been received so well!

Mixed Signals, A piece about interspecies/human-animal communication. My final project for my sensors art class! It's a plush cat with a LED Matrix head who responds with abstract compositions when you pet it's back. Sewn into it's back is conductive thread that acts as a capacitive touch sensor -- and pretty cool, it's not really visible under the fur! Inside the head is where the arduino uno is housed, and a long-life battery is housed in the body in a hidden zipper pouch. Embroidered into the plush's back are rows of conductive thread that serve as one big capacitive touch sensor to trigger the matrix. At first I thought of programming the matrix with 'faces' or recognizable symbols like letters or numbers, but then decided it might be too cliche and too embedded in human communication to be animal communication. I chose to instead create abstract compositions that would be displayed when the cat was touched, the thinking being that they would invite interpretation by the viewer, just as animal communication invites interpretation. In critique, one of the first things my classmates began discussing was whether one reaction was a 'good' reaction or a 'bad' reaction, so I was really pleased with that! This lends to my concept being that whatever the animal's intention behind it's communication, we only take away our human interpretation of it.

I really really love this. It looks like my cat that was really close to me and died young because of miscommunication. This really does speak to me.. And really pretty too.Β

Wow! This is really interesting to me as a potential computer science major who is also interested in art; it's cool to see how you combined the two disciplines.

Awesome! A plush of this sort isn't very common, so it's pretty neat to see. Are you going to do more with the program later?

NoxxPlush In reply to adamlhumphreys [2015-12-16 07:30:59 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! I definitely could reprogram it to do other things. The beauty of arduino haha Now that it's built I can change it up if I want. I just have to see if I can keep the matrix; the university ordered it for me so I might have to get my own.

Such a display is a fair load for the Arduino, even at 9 or 12Β bits per color, so that's pretty cool. I can see why you'd need a fairly large battery too.
That shouldn't be a problem! They're $35-$50, but I suppose you can always combineΒ two 16x32 displays.

I was glad that mine worked just fine; a classmate tried to use a 32x64 and was surprised to find that it didn't work haha..
And yeah! I used a usb power bank meant for charging phones and tablets and it worked swimmingly! c: If I can't keep the matrix, I'll just order the same one from adafruit. It's just hard to justify on my student budget when I don't necessarily need it to work right now anyways. :<Β  I'll just have to beg for my professor not to decapitate the poor thing!

Granted it could've been done, but with limited results. ^^
Makes sense to me! The convince of a regulated battery pack is hard to beat.
I hear you there. Β Well, hopefullyΒ the screen isΒ detachable without too much difficulty to remove, though it can be challengingΒ to make something modular like that for a plush. Hope he survives!

holy heck Noxxie this is amazing! I absolutely love the concept and the fact your classmates were discussing what might be a good or bad reaction is very impressive as well! It keeps people thinking and leaves it open for the views of others!

That is just amazing. At first glace, it looked very realistic. The plush part itself is awesome, not to mention the sensors put in it. How do you do all of that? I'm very impressed with this work.Β

I can promise it was likely a long process, and hopefully something I can cover in detail on my Patreon once I get it setup. However, I probably won't be using any matrices, especially that big. ^^ You can find a tutorial here: learn.adafruit.com/32x16-32x32…
