Description I am coming for you

Through the river of blood

Further away with every step I take

Never to rest

Until my heart

is torn off my chest

I really liked Dante's Inferno: Animated Epic so this is sort of fan art I guess... its based just loosely but whatever.

As usual, Gimp & mouse, no reference, feedback very welcome. (something like "Hey, you noob, you overdid the sharpen filter or ... "the scythe is too small dude")

Also because there is a religious symbol and blood, tell me if you feel like it should be with warning. There is no real gore, just blood everywhere... but tell me if you got offended somehow, and I will put 18+ warning on it.

This is AWESOME!

What would it cost to use this piece of art as a CD-Cover??

I just noticed you use a computer mouse. Awesome! I used a mouse on up to the beginning of this year when I got my first tablet. I have to say, I like the tablet a lot better for the pressure sensitivity it has, it's much easier to work with over the mouse as far as shading and coloring goes. For line work it's about the same.

This looks seriously awesome. Nice use of contrast and unsaturated colors in the back drop. There's a lot to look at here. The only thing that my eyes keep going to is the blurry patch of grass/dirt (?) to the right side of the spear sticking out of the pond. It's a sharp difference from the detailed rocky ground around it. It's no biggie though, the rest looks awesome.

Thanks for feedback! I haven't been using mouse for quite some time now, tablet really destroys it I was stupid for using it for as long as I did. I got the cheapest & smallest Genius tablet and it does all I want. I couldn't really use a big tablet, it was uncomfortable for me.

About the little critique you posted I definitely agree, that spot caught my attention as well last time I saw this picture again. When I was starting I just used to randomly fill canvas with things, without giving it much thought and there were spots like that. Composition basically makes little to no sense in this picture.

Thanks again for comments, appreciate it.

Lol, yes, now that I have a lap top (My old PC keeled over and died, ) I've been liking the tablet more and more since I don't have a USB mouse. I have a small Bamboo Fun and don't think I could use a large tablet either since I draw by moving my fingers and not my hand XD And you're welcome. I still think it's a very cool picture

Thanks man, glad you like it. I'm glad that someone who obviously prefers traditional art likes a heavily digital piece like this.

WOW, just... WOW. How come I didn't see it before?? My god... it is astonishing!

Here your lighting work is really good, love it, really. It is very brilliant literally speaking, it shines well, properly, and in a beautiful way. Texture work is excellent as always. Awesome details like the "hell fox" in the bottom right corner, the mask in the middle, the shiny golden coins. The river is of blood? If it is, the fog should looks more redish I think, since it is supposed to be evaporation of some liquid nearby, which comes to be the river of blood (red color). But the fog texture itself is really good. Saturation and contrast of the colors of this entire piece was really well done.

The front character is very good. Anatomy wise, looks OK to me. But the background character has a bottom part a little visually confusing, is it legs, cloth or ectoplasm? You could visually better define that part.

The ghost is good, and OK, but looks shrunk, could be more strained.

Is that a shack on the right? Or cave entrances? I can't define very well because of the perspective, you could work more on that.

And last, I think, if you feel like experimenting, try to experiment with mono or dual-tone coloring for the entire piece, do that with leveled opacity, to leave some of the original colors, you will see a more cohesive color mood for the entire piece. This process is hard to describe, I hope you get what I'm trying to mean. You can do it with any already done work, like this one, GIMP have awesome color tools to play with (David Revoy do this as part of his style, on the construction of his works, instead of post-production, you can see it in some of his videos). Also, I recommend the set of plugins for GIMP: FX Foundry, but I think you already know these hehe (Also, GIMP Paint Shop set of customization). Take care with the harmony of colors, you could try to be more homogeneous, for example, take care with too much color bleed spots on the scene, try to harmonize more the different set of colors. Playing with one or two layers of mono or dual-tone coloring with opacity above one already finished piece will give you a idea of these aspects, and the possibilities it gives you. One clear example, is the movie called 300, it has a sepia tone for all the scenes, which, in that movie particular case, is a very strong sepia tone, but you can set mood tones as strong or as weak as you wish to better fit your style of mood storytelling. But, it is not a rule, and not every artist like this, so, it is just a tip I'm giving you, don't take it very seriously, I really enjoy works that use that technique, but again, it is my taste influence here hehehe. Personally, I do it myself for almost all of my photos published here on dA.

But feel free to to ignore everything I've said LOL, I'm not a good 2D, 3D artist (I'm more of a Landscape and Macro Photographer), but I love art very much (both 2D and 3D, and mainly landscape/environment/atmosphere ones), so I'm very observant for everything in art, and based on that I try to do constructive critiques in hope it is useful for someone else progress.

Be well, see ya.

Hey man, thanks for all the critiques on my characters. About this picture I still like it, although composition is quite unbalanced. I'm not much into photography but if you ever want some feedback on yours, just ask. I will probably not tell you anything all that sophisticated, but I will tell you how I feel about it.

Thanks for your feedback man, glad you like it. Glad you spotted the gargoyle and all the little things. What's Goth Tiki?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

BladedSpear In reply to Nrekkvan [2010-12-02 00:35:17 +0000 UTC]

A tiki is a big wooden statchoo, like an Easter Island Kahoona, except it's made of wood and painted with a fierce tribal face.

A Goth tiki is just one that uses a lot of eye liner, listens to trash metal, and thinks that it's cool to be indifferent. There's one glowy eyed one riiiight in the middle.

Very cool, what software/os did you use to make this?

Nrekkvan In reply to doctormo [2010-06-25 20:46:38 +0000 UTC]

Glad you like it. This was made entirely in GIMP. As for OS I use 64bit Vista, I have like 100 games in my collection and I want to be able to install and play any of them any time I want as easy as possible. Otherwise I'd probably be running some Linux distro, I tried a few and liked it. I know about Wine btw.

Of course, have you tried PlayOnLinux? It's a program that lets you install those games without fuss.

damn.

I wish I was this good.

I like the ghosty outline-y bit...
Only thing I have an issue with--the dude with the scythe, because it's just the blood coming out of the back where his butt should be, I feel like there's something missing. Maybe you could do armour all the way down, and then have blood leaking out of it? The way it is feels really sudden...
just a thought!
Beautiful job.

My bad then! Thanks for comment. It is a cloak soaked with blood, I should have differed the color a bit or add metal plates or something to make it more obvious, I will be more cautious next time. Thanks for feedback, very useful!
