Description Just for my own reference.

I want to talk about character height for a second.

I see an awful lot of "this guy is 7' tall (or taller)" on DA. And I wonder if people really stop and think about what that really means.

Some height statistics for you:
The average ceiling clearance is between 8' and 9'. Doorways are smaller.
The average male is 5'9".
The average female is 5'4".
The average motorcycle is suited to people no taller than 6'3".
Clothing in non-specialty stores is suited to people only 3" taller or shorter than the average (if that).
Risks of extreme height include (to name a few) joint pain, migraines, heart trouble or failure, increased risk of illness and certain cancers, diabetes, obstructive sleep apnea, vocal distortion and premature death.

So this 7' human will have to, basically, special order everything, which is an expensive way to live, will have trouble in sexual relationships (take it from me! I am 5'5" and dated a 6'5" burly dude). Riding a horse would be a nightmare for the horse, too! (Poor horse!!)

It's not as "sexy" and amazing as I thought before I took the time to consider the actual math and physics involved in making such huge people. It's something I think about with each tall character I make. Depending on their context, they all pay the price and it is reflected in each drawing or written episode of their lives. It's one of those constant factor things.

Which brings me to Arthur Chase (seen above). If I really believe all I said, then what kind of hypocrite am I to have a dude that big, right? Well, I will explain. (Bear with me, here).
In the time of the Egyptians, the tallest pharaoh on record was Rameses II, who was 5'9". He was considered a giant in his time. The average woman was 4'10". Now, thousands of years later we are, on average, about a half a foot taller. Humanity is very slowly getting taller.
Arthur's time is about 10,000 years from now. They have moved, adapted, started calling themselves Pazourians and the men now average 6'3", following an evolutionary trend we can see in action in our own time. So what this means for Arthur is that he is about as tall to the Pazourian eye as a 6'5" man is to us today. Enough to turn heads and keep his life only marginally difficult because of it. His people had 10,000 years to adapt and get used to such a change.

I put him next to Lothaire, who is just a hair above today's average, to illustrate that point ... mostly to myself. It's good to see them all in this context.

And then there is Kay'. There are things Kay' has to consider in his everyday life that others would not.
* Every floor he walks on and piece of load-bearing furniture he uses must be able to withstand his weight. (Easily 4,000 lbs.)
* His clothes must be made of nothing thinner than sailcloth if he doesn't want to rip them terribly every time he moves.
* His shoes have to have special materials for the soles to compensate for his large impact and protect the floors.
* The ball on the end of a ballpoint pen his size is almost 3/4 inch in diameter, making it very difficult for him sign documents in a small and neat manner. (Hence his huge signature.)
* He has to watch were he steps *all**the**time*. If he were to accidentally bump into someone, clip them with his toe or heel, or (gods forbid) trip and fall on someone there is a serious chance he will injure them pretty bad or even kill them.
* He must speak in very hushed tones so he doesn't hurt people's ears. He will only yell in an open space with suitable opportunity for the energy of it to escape, and even then he has never all-out screamed ... ever.
* Most vehicles or space-faring vessels must be outfitted with custom fuel tank and reserves in order to compensate when he is in them.
* Most of his food is taken in a reconstituted form because something like a sandwich is too small and hard to hold. In the Order of the Red Cross compound, a special greenhouse is devoted completely to growing gen-engineered vegetable just his size. No. Really. [link]

And that's just a few of the problems he deals with every day. I'm not even going to get started on bathroom stuff. Not today!

To me it is very important that each amazing thing about a character is counterbalanced in some way. Otherwise it's just too easy, and I have to start using "fantasy" explanations like "magic" to have it begin to make sense. I like to use science whenever I can. Keeps me honest. And the research keeps me smart. So I am sorry if I come off as patronizing or heavy-handed. This is just what I think about.

Wow! This is the first time I see anyone on dA actually thing about their super-sized characters so deeply. Keep up your good work!

I usually, beside stuff similar to points you mentioned (although specific ballpoint pen is something I never ever thought about) use stuff like genetic differences (or manipulations) so these giants can have full strong health and long lives (not really so much unrealistic) and there's usually whole nation of such giants with own country, so no problems with living.

Interesting! ^_^ I have a race of aliens that are about as tall as Kay' (the Cel). They are humanoid, but have ungulate physiology and are usually slender. Their bones are reinforced with diamond to support their weight (suggested to me on another forum, and it makes sense to me as diamond is just an exotic form of carbon). They are not a "lightworld" species, the gravity of their home planet is only slightly less than that of Earth, and the reason for their size is more to do with the concentration of oxygen in their atmosphere and their ability to take in and withhold greater amounts of it, courtesy of four lungs and multiple nostril-like orifices on their bodies which vent heat and air.
The ones that still live on their home planet are isolated and don't live with human-scale beings, so they don't have the problem of living in environments that are designed for beings much smaller than themselves. The ones that live in space and serve as soldiers for a galactic empire are the standard for architecture and whatnot, so smaller aliens have to cope with living in buildings that, to them, are WAY bigger and sturdier than they need to be.
Thorough research and background is awesome I just found your gallery through AlienAlliance, def watching.

Very interesting. I love reading explanations behind unusual characters. I imagine that other "scientific" allowances could be made, in place of magic, to make his life easier. For example, his bones might be different from normal human bones so that his 14' of bones weighs less than that much human bone would weigh while still being strong enough to support his body mass. You could design a metabolic/digestive system for him that would make it easier for him to exist in his world.

Gotta love some research. So many people just ramble on and on about exceptionally tiny characters, or huge ones without having the slightest idea of how it would actually work. One thing I love with certain characters is that they can be developed and/or realistic enough to be alive
Either way, I've learned quite a lot reading this, very nice job

Thanks very much! I really *do* try and take things like size into account because, like you said, it adds more realism and makes the character a little more believable. I think to see a character go through little troubles (big guys not fitting through doors or little ones not being able to reach things) makes them relateable and it's something I love in other characters.

I am very glad you learned and liked!

You're most welcome

I definitely agree! I also think personality is important, a character needs to be able to frown and laugh, whereas most people just make these hardcore lone-wolf ninja pros that never express anything... xD

Physics and physiology apply to fantasy settings too! And it is easy to overlook. I love the way that you brought up some very valid points here, especially about the clothing and the horse.

When I rewrote my story again, I had to really rethink things especially for Tymr who is 6'7. The horse he rides had to be researched to see if there was a breed that could support him. His strength is inconvenient and he has to be super careful around children and women.

If anyone remembers Andre the Giant, from old WWF fame and "The Princess Bride", he died comparatively young because of heart problems. When he was filming he was in a lot of pain.
When visiting in England we couldn't get over how small the suits of armor looked! It was too funny! I could have fit into an infantryman's armor! So I don't see how there would be any flaws in the logic with your Arthur being average height in his day.

So yes there are a lot of things that are well represented in your comparison here. I love Kay's glasses. I like the uniforms.

believe me i come from a family with a genetic something or other that makes all us males never below 6'4 and most about 6'8. I'm only 21 and have early onset arthritis, my knees and legs have trouble with circulation and my back didn't grow at the same rate in all areas leading to back pains and worse.

The only behemoth in terms of height i have in my arsenal is Gareth, who hits 6'5. Its one of those things that I also put careful consideration into, height i mean.

BUT on the artistic note, i have to say Kay is absolutely amazing. I love his strong facial features, and the gentle touch of vulnerability he has to contrast them so beautifully. I just love the way you captured the metallic sheen of his skin but didn't make it too bright or outstanding to make him seem severely out of place. He feels and looks so natural, its hard to believe he is such a marvel! Beautiful work

Love the size chart. And Kay looks cool and quite reserved. I commend him for his patience and effort in going about his day to day life. Watching ones step lest he squishes people is one painstaking job. Plus the voice lowering too. Darn... I'd love to see the outcome of his scream. Bet it could shake buildings.

It's good to know though that most of the tall people these days seem to be coping quite well. Basketball players and athletes for instance do rather well with their heights. Maybe it depends on ones way of life and/or physical activities and bone structure.

But it's funny how the average woman is 5'4 and average male is 5'9. Most Asians are shorter than that and there are a LOT of us in the world. From observation (not statistics), males here (in the Philippines) average 5'7 but there are still a LOT shorter than that. And most women are 5' or below. Lately though I noticed a lot of the young ones are growing just a bit more taller. Maybe in 10years, we'd have a 5'4 average for women too.

I prefer science over magic/fantasy too. It's just more fun to put out facts than to blame it all on magic. hehe.

I like the scale, but you know...height is really something that to me is very trivial. I'm 5'5 and my boyfriend is a big dude. No issues here, but maybe we're the odd case. He's perfectly healthy for 6'10.

Nevertheless, drawing characters who are very different sizes is very difficult because a lot of the time it looks bizarre. You've got a talent there.

What an awesome character. I feel his pain because I myself am 5'4 and my other half is 6'6. He also has size 15 shoe. Which is pretty much impossible to find. Doors and low ceilings and chandeliers attack his poor noggin on a daily basis.
I am however grateful for jacamo clothing even though its over priced
Back to your marvellous character though.. he is so well thought out.. I love the fact there is alot against him in an unique way. Did I also add he is rather striking visually too? Well yes there is that.

You don't come off patronizing or heavy-handed in the least. I'm a great lover of, and stickler for, practicality in my speculative fiction and your bent towards the same is one of the many things I love about you - as well as your willingness to give characters traits that cause problems, because, well everything comes with a tradeoff, and the more different someone is in a certain aspect, the more adjustments will have to be made for it. I LOVE what you've done with Kay' (he seems such a nice fellow, too) and that you've taken humanity's trend toward height increase into account. Also, it's pretty kickin' rad to see the height comparison here. It's quite striking how immense fourteen feet really is.

deppfan85 [2011-02-16 19:30:33 +0000 UTC]

Very good points. I mean, really, when people start going and making all these incredibly tall characters, they usually don't think. And a lot of what I've seen, comes from trying to one-up others who have tall characters. Personally, I know I'd hate being incredibly tall. Everybody in my family, except for me, is above-average in height. None of the men are under 6ft (even my 14 year old cousin is approaching 6ft 3, and he might still grow some), and the next-shortest woman, after my little 5ft 4 frame, is my aunt who has to be at least 5ft 7, if not taller. I must not have gotten the right doses of whatever is in the water. But back to the main point.... they're always bumping their heads on EVERYTHING. My uncle's about 6ft 2 or so, and he almost has to stoop to come inside.

But, I think if you were to put a bunch of the RnR members up against Kay', they'd finally have a better understanding of what the world's like for my Chai. XD

An interesting outlook/exercise on not only character creation, but world building. I have noticed that a lot of creators make their characters arbitrarily tall with no thought for the deeper implications. I didn't find this patronizing or heavy-handed: It's something that people should bear in mind for their work (unless, of course, they use magic as their answer-all. )

Or, for the concise comment: Good art/read. ^^

Average is 5'4" for girls and 5'9" for guys... really? Maybe I should stop teasing the girls about being short. I'm actually curious how recently a data collection has been done on this.

Not having a go. I'm female and stand 5'10" which is definitely in the upper ranges of women I know (best friends girl is 6'1" and Leen is a massive 6'4" to keep me in my place) which explains why I can never find clothes that fit properly*. Honestly it had just never occurred to me that I was abnormally tall, probably because most my friends are guys... Learn something new every day.

*Probably explains why I used to break stiletto heels back when I bothered with them.

I had such a weird time coming to grips with the height thing myself. And I am not sure when this was done. Probably a bit too long ago to be the most accurate thing ever, I think no longer than 25 years or so. But, for me, who is 5'5" and taller than most of my girlfriends it makes a bit of sense.

The men's height one really threw me for a loop, though. My dad was 6'5" and my uncles and grandfather even taller than that. So to me a man of that height was no big deal. I saw it every day. The there was my mom who was 5'. So I was so skewed before I started looking into all of this. I actually had a 7'2" man with a 5'3" woman ... then I thought about the sexual implications of all that. (Not so good.) Which triggered a *massive* rescaling of almost everyone. And I hope I am the better for it.

I think that's kind of my thing too. All the men in my family and almost all my male friends stand 6ft or over, except my Dad who is 5'7". So I've never felt particularly tall.

Hmmm, my Aunt Lyn is 5'3" and Uncle Bill is 6'5" so its not that unfeasible. Barely... Oh god my brain's doing the logistics thing. I'm just gonna hide now.

If Kay' wasn't so uptight, he'd probably go naked too.
