*edit*
lets clear it up: my message through this tutorial is NOT "dont use Photoshop" but rather "start with SAI because Photoshop is indeed a very complex program, not meant for most beginners".
I don't hate Photoshop, instead, I do recognize it's a very good program that can be used to complete SAI's functions OR be used for the whole process without any other software.
If you start by working with SAI, learning is much more easy and fluid, and after a year and half using it and completing with Photoshop, I guess SAI could disapear from the face of earth, I would intuitivelly know how to work the basics of a full drawing with Photoshop already.
It then becomes a choice to keep using SAI or not, and I chose to stay with SAI for now.
I'm offering the easiest and most functional choice i know for beginers, so they can work with all the functions the pros have without having to costumize a whole program they are not even familiar with.
Feel free to suggest any other program as well, if you know something that works as easy and effective as SAI.
Man, this file needs to be redone!

oh god... it doesn't it's paint tool sai's biggest flaw... but `fox-orian made this [link] maybe you can find a program that suits you and works on a mac...
I don't use manga studio often, but *inma has some awesome youtube tutorials for it [link] [link] and this is probably the best way I can help you with manga studio

My Tablet was $50 and it works fine. ; v ;
It just depends on the user, I guess.
The small tablet screen of Wacom doesn't work for me. e-e;;

Well, its actually a pretty good priced tablet. Old Bamboos are costing 40 euros (45dollars?) so a tablet of another brand with that price may be better than wacom's bamboo. Technology is also getting better for everyone as we speak!
I think it also depends on the tablet's brand and computer. I've seen cheap tablets lagging on cheap computers. Its horrible! Q___Q

Maybe it was an expensive tablet, it's just that the price dropped?
If I had my old computer, I would die trying to use my tablet.
Paint Tool Sai used to take like 20 minutes to OPEN LOL

I'm a bit confused with #2 on the myth list.
Does it change anything if I prefer to sketch on paper, scan it and create a line work layer over it to make line art rather than going 100% digital working ( I tend to sketch two-three drawings during school so I'm just curious)?
As for tablet tips...interesting...

Oh, its ok to mix means. Its actually ok to go fully traditional too, using copics, watercolors and pens. Its just that you dont really have to use all that, while digital art does force you into those techniques.
If you end up coloring and shading too, then its the same effect using a tablet or not.

I hope you don't mind me answering, as I do the same thing.
It (most likely) does not change anything due to the fact a sketch is a sketch- generic lines that will be eventfully discarded for a lineart or painted over for a lineless look.
Most of the skills set is based upon the lineart but mostly coloring. (You can get away with a sloppy lineart sometimes) so, no, sketching on paper and then scanning it has no overall effect on your skills as far as I know.
Personally I enjoy sketching on paper- I have a smaller-sized tablet that I have pretty good control over, but I'm still much better lining ad sketching on paper. I've sketched with Sai before but.... not the same. Often I print the sketch out and go over it/redraw it with a pencil. XD There's usually improvement for me.

Agreed!
But i do have to say that increasing the transparency of the pen tool and adding a sand paper texture at a dark gray color also makes interesting sketches on sai! I'm actually doing lineart with it right now xD but if i werent using a cintiq, it wouldn't really be that enjoyable imo...

Thanks for answering!~ I don't mind really.
Yeah. I'm just getting a taste on digital line art in Sai and traditional line art inking(that is until I get a new set since my old one died out). For Sai, I just use the curve tool on line work layer and change the size for certain parts (you know, clothing, skin, objects, etc.) cause I don't have a tablet. I mean, at least that's how I did this [link]
Yeah...Again, thank you for answering my question!

ssspitfire In reply to MangaOtakuTB15 [2012-12-28 16:58:22 +0000 UTC]
That's awesome- I've used the curve tool before but... I suck with it. LOL I used to ink traditionally but stopped because my pens were kinda blob-ish (when on the paper the ink would spread out when I pressed to hard etc) but maybe that's because I'm to cheap to buy nicer paper. XD So digital linearting for me.
Are you looking into a tablet?

MangaOtakuTB15 In reply to ssspitfire [2012-12-28 18:53:24 +0000 UTC]
Thanks! I might have to agree with that until I get good quality ink pens some time.
Yeah. I am. In fact, I came across this deviation one day when I was looking for some information about drawing tablets a week or two back. I've heard a lot about it being a must have when it came to digital art but that's not the real reason. I'm rather curious about what difference it makes compared to using curve tool and mouse and some advantages in using one to create art works. Also, I don't plan on butchering my mouse if I attempt to try out digital sketching anytime soon. XD

I'd have to say a tablet is 98% worthwhile if you're planning to work digitally. (the 2% is re severed for getting used to it... the first 2 months I got mine was horrible. I hated the transition. But now it' really worthwhile, because its cheaper and companies are much more likely to go for the digital art.) I have a smaller sized tablet that I used the S-1+ stabilizer on in Sai. It works wonders for just a hobbiest artist like me. I admit, if i had more money then I would love to have the tablets in #3 of this Tut/how to. But a $60 Wacom bamboo Pen (old versions) works almost just as good.
But the difference is that (in Sai, at least) Density, line weight, pressure, size, etc is all factored in with just a line from the tablet. You don't need to click around with a mouse to make a line, adjust the pressure and line weight. Coloring is also very useful.
But, if that wasn't clear enough (and It kind isn't) I can show you line action LOL using Join.me if you're online at the moment.

I agree photoshop is a wonderful expensive program but for people who have never used it or just starting out...its like learning to read japanense rofl. I've never used SAI but I have used photoshop and gimp. Photoshop I'm still trying to get the hang of it looks nothing like the old photoshop i had compared to the CS5

Years ago I was pretty much against digital art. I thought digital artists can't draw with their heart and soull because they can't really touch the piece they are working at x'DD Thanks deviantART in general, you opened my eyes
Ehm.. and needless to say that I deeply agree with every word you say in your tutorial!^^

Nuei In reply to Katsu-Ya [2012-10-18 15:54:21 +0000 UTC]
Well, it's a better excuse not to like digital art because the work can't be touched than simply being ignorant of the methods! It is true we have a slightly different connection to art, and a digital artist may start drawing worse than usual on the paper, but all in all, it's just a matter of technique!
Hope it was useful! ^^

I agree. Photoshop is pretty tedious lol! I'd love to learn SAI (I use it once in a while), but I'm much too lazy and used to Photoshop. It would be awesome if they had created a program with all the nice pros of Photoshop and SAI.. put together. -then emerging new cons appear- ;3; But nice tutorial~!

True, I always wish there was an adobe program specially created for people who draw, and not a generalist one... It just annoys me that it has to be optimized for drawing and pimped all over for you to draw the same things you draw on SAI... Like the Crarcoal look of the lineart or the deliciously sensitive water tool... *sigh* the world is never perfect

Well, there are some of other brands, way cheaper, but you have to check out the sensitivity and quality of work of each one... Personally, I don't know any screen tablet user who works with other than Cintiqs... Except for faggots who think they can draw, but they really can't!

I'm jumping in here late but i wanted to tell you that you can download SAI free online in different locations or a friend can give it to you (if you aren't morally against that of course). As for a painting program besides SAI you can try out GIMP (gimp.org) which is like Photoshop but a bit less complicated (to me) but serves all the same functions ^^
I personally use a combo or SAI (lineart) and Gimp (color/painting) to do my artwork ^^

I've tried gimp, but I really don't like the feel of it. I really don't know why :c I really would like sai since when I used the thirty day trial I was stuck at first but there are a lot of Sai tutorials online and I got the hang of things really easily. :c then of course my trial expired.

Nuei In reply to CloudHat [2012-09-20 11:29:02 +0000 UTC]
You can download a 30 day trial (every google search will lead you to some), but since this is not a free program, it's better to buy it if you want to avoid legal issues :/ Specially in your country I guess...
It's cheap though... I can't remember how much, but arround 40 to 60 dollars. Other drawing programs and Photoshop are 100 to 300 dollars, so SAI is a little wonder!
Glad I could help
