Description

I've been working on my portfolio, and I decided to redesign a famous series of the 60s, Hanna-Barbera Wacky races (los autos locos). This was a very original series for its time, with many colorful characters, funny cars and an archetypal villain as the main character Dick Dastardly (Pierre Nodoyuna), a real loser and unlucky guy with a terrible tendency to exaggerated traps (but the label of "cheater" is today quite unfair, after all, the race was characterized by "everything is allowed to win" and many competitors were just as "cheats" to him). There have been remakes and attempts to revive the series "Wacky Races Forever" and "Fender Bender 500" (curiously, Dick won a race in this show) but these products never jelled in the love the public

From now on, I will use the original names (the usa names) to talk about the characters, and and do not use Castilian versions (los Hermanos Macana, Piedro y Roco). This is more comfortable.

The Sergeant Blast and Private Meekly were two soldiers who racing in "the Army Surplus Special" (a vehicle half jeep desert- half tank, with a dangerous canyon included) For me, these characters were a bit sinister: First, because they used a canyon discriminately . second, because they were two soldiers in time of the Vietnam War ... Meekly  is docile and a little stunned, while Blast was the typical man of arms (always screaming). As the series is lack of ethnic characters, I have drawn Blast as a black man .

safely, the best racers in this series were always the Slag Brothers (Rock and Gravel Slag) a pair of identical troglodytes covered with hair, that (despite their barbaric behavior) were incredibly good for the win (almost always, they were getting second place ). The Boulder Mobile was just a piece of rock with wheels, nothing more. Although, I think everyone remembers this couple fondly.

Sergeant Bernard Blast, an old veteran of the Korean War and an accomplished military engineer, had grown bored of his desk-job and desired to feel the thrills of battle once again. His wish was somewhat granted when he heard word of a series of "Way-Out Wacky Races" that would pit the finest drivers in the world against each other in the most outlandish vehicles ever conceived. Eager to put his skills as an engineer to the test, Sergeant Blast threw together the "Army Surplus Special" using the finest decommissioned military-grade parts money could buy. But there was one problem... Blast hasn't renewed his license since '59!

A flower-child drafted in the wake of the war in Vietnam, Private Marlowe Meekly was less than happy to be in his current position, especially considering he about as much spine as a jellyfish. So when his background in auto-motive repair got the attention of Sergeant looking for a "Personal driver" who would be exempt from going to the front, Meekly naively accepted the mad-sergeant's offer. Now he's certain he'd have been happier dying of malaria at the bottom of a tiger trap.

Wow, that back story is very interesting, I liked it
Thank you very much for this message. Certainly, running in Wacky race is like dying of malaria at the bottom of a tiger trap.

I can just picture black-Sarget Blast sounding like a mix between Samuel L Jackson and the drill instructor from Full Metal Jacket.

That's an interesting idea making Sgt Blast black. I had my own revision ideas for the show where Meekly's daughter is mixed-race (white and hispanic) and helping a now 60-something Sgt Blast in the races. I could definitely see the good Sargent being one of the more aggressive players in the races.

I like your idea of meekly's daughter is mixed-race (white and hispanic), the truth, I think you should use that in your own revision of the show
yeah, actually, I think the Sergeant is one of the most aggressive characters in the classic show, and one of the most disturbing (a soldier in the Vietnam War WTF?)

Thanks.

The original show was in 1968 and the Vietnam War was still going on so it makes sense.

I really love this series, as you know. It is true that it was unique to have military characters during an animated 1960s show during the Vietnam War, which was very anti-government, anti-military, anti-authoritarian, anti-establishment era. So, it's wonderful to see the peace sign necklace on Meekly. He appears as if he was a "hippie" draftee of the Vietnam War who very much dislikes his forced career. Poor Meekly.  I love the addition of black Sergeant Blast; it's great to see racial diversity with him and Ant Hill Mob.

Slag Brothers....they are weird. As much as I love Captain Caveman, I never understood why he looks the way he does, so I don't understand why the Slag Brothers look the way they do either. Also, why couldn't they talk like Captain Caveman? I liked the Slag Brothers, nonetheless. They're at least smart enough to understand the wheel. I really love their sense of motion! The hits look like they hurt!

yeah, actually, it seems a crazy idea to have military  men  in a children's program during the Vietnam War, but I guess you're right, it was something anti-establishment era. And the characters, despite being sinister, had a lot of humor. Yeah, from the beginning, I thought that would be funny that Meekly was "a child of the flowers" style "hair". And for that reason, I have incorporated the peace sign necklace, I'm glad you like the detail. At least (as they participate in car racing) they will not have to participate in the war, so I guess Private Meekly is happy with this. Yeah, black Sergeant Blast is cute
