was a morning where LeeAnne and I had driven for hours, being snowed out of one venture and forgetting directions for this one but still trying to find it..
ended up driving for miles to find reception for directions..turns out we had parked in the right place and walked the wrong direction up the creek! tensions high, dog whining..parked where we had left miles earlier and found the path to the viewpoint. as the sounds echoed and sights of the water started to appear..all tensions, frustrations..even the whiny dog cease to exist! after being in awe from the upper view..made the sketchy scramble down to the base. unmanageable mist flailing everywhere..scooted out to the edge of a fallen tree over the creek..i think the energy from my amazement made a brief gap in the mist, feeling it rush by my sides completely missing me as i stood directly in front of its path..a pure celestial moment

Allows you to download free topo maps, record tracks, mark locations online or offline, and lots of other goodies.
As the AMEX people like to say, I never leave home without it (and a beefy spare USB-based battery).

Dedicated GPS-es are exorbitantly expensive, both to own and operate (very few offer free or low-cost maps), and have fugly interfaces and limited features - at least the ones that cost lest than $500.Β With external USB-based batteries giving you the ability to run your phone as a GPS for days at a time I see little reason to own one.Β Yes, the app is Android-only and when I was briefly considering trying iOS a few years ago I did not find something quite as useful.Β In either case, I always have a good old analog compass in my backpack.Β It is easy to bust either a phone or GPS, better safe than sorry.
