Description
FULL VIEW OR DIE"It didn't used to be this way, Smithers. No, it didn't used to be this way at all."
A miserable old vampire sits on the step in front of his throne, nostalgic for the days when he was sexy because he drank blood and stayed up all night, not because of his bunny-ears.

!
I don't think anyone else has yet realised that decent parts of this aren't symetrical...which means more work went in than merely using the mirror image function.

And I officially hate you and your skills. *Cries*
But seriously... why? Why would you attempt something like this? I mean, sure, it's probably one of the top best Illustrator vector things I have ever seen and easily the most detailed, but why? It must kill to do something like this.
But it IS so f**king pretty. The colors.... oh, the colors. I trust there will be a print?

Why? Well I am starting to ask my self that question...
Print? Maybe, but probably not, considering I've sold a big fat zero prints so far, and this seems to be less popular than the ones I've got prints of.

Jetpack took over 10 days to get to 6 favs which this has done in one. It took ConflagratingChimera 4days.
Sure you probably have more watchers now, but you can hardly call it less popular than the others.

It's very detailed thats for sure. wish there was a little more information on this, but it looks nice just the same. Must have been slow work trying to do stuf with all thse wing cells. I would recomend working on parts in different pages, then for the main one, copy an outline of what you want to bring in so you can arrange it without the massive detail and slow move speeds.
I like how you hid the title and your name in it.

More information in what way? There's no real story behind it or anything - I just wanted to do something in a medieval portrait style.

Amazing work, as I said on Gondolend, John. I'll re-type my thoughts for here. I love how when I look at it, it calls to mind all things that fly forth on wings (Insectia, Chiroptera, Pterosauria, and Aves). I really love this piece. I think you should consider selling prints. I'm sure there are people who might be interested in this.

I can't imagine anyone not liking this. It is absolutely fantastic! I don't remember ever seeing so much detailing in any vector work before.

As I discovered, there's a reason vector works aren't so detailed - it bogs computers down something terrible. I made it on a 500MHz G4, and it was getting nearly impossible to work on by the end. Surprisingly, it wasn't all that much better when I tried it on a 2.8GHz Celeron either.
Well, that, and the fact that it gets REALLY BORING.

I can imagine that, it probably doesn't print either. It is a fantastic work anyway... but something to be done probably once in a lifetime.

sweet jesus man! the detail is mind blowing! the colors are great, this reminds me of ancient Egyptian art. You were asking for some tips in Illustrator for complex vectors, well what I usually to is seperate some of the different parts of a vector into layers and turn off the layers that I'm not using (clicking on the little eye icon on the layer) and that helps in run somewhat faster if it's not trying to display everything at once. That or create parts of it in different files, like for this one maybe creating the backdrop in one file, the wings in another, and the body in yet another, and then combining them all at the end.

Hey, thanks. And thanks for the tips too. I did actually do most of what you suggest - I even worked in outline view as much as possible. I think creating the parts in different files is a good idea, I'll try to do more next time - though I think I'm going to back off the stupendously detailed stuff for a while - it's fizzling my brain.

Well, it's inspired by medieval portraiture - they have writing on them pretty similar to this.
