Rith'len was born to Erre and Zalcik in the city of Tritonis. She had an older sister, Siarra, who was her closest friend. Her father was formerly from Xebel and had been a kings guard there, while her mother was born in Tritonis. Rith'len adored her life in Tritonis, it was full of life and prosperity. She felt comfortable there with other atlanteans of all diversity. Who didn't fit the "pure" Atlantean norm, at the time she was too young to understand what this meant. Rith'len younger brother, Eris, was born four years after. He was stubborn and loud despite being so young. At the age of six, Rith'len's mother became sick after consuming food unknowingly contaminated by humans. Despite everything there was nothing they could do for her mother. The people of Tritonis became outraged by humans continuously polluting their waters and destroying their habitat. Many argued what they should do, fight or stay silent. In order to preserve his family, Zalcik departed from Tritonis and found refuge in Poseidonis.
At the age of eight she began studying in the conservatory of sorcery after manifesting Atlantean sorcery. She began learning under Queen Mera and her other skilled students, Garth, Tula, and briefly Kaldur before he left to the surface in order to become a protégé to Aquaman. Rith'len was quick to pick up on water constructs and was quite good at it, but struggled with spoken spells. She studied intensely, hoping to one day be powerful. Rith’len kept to herself most of the time. She eventually opened herself up with the influence of Queen Mera, becoming friends with Coral and Lori Lemaris, who she knew briefly when they both lived in Tritonis. Though she often butted heads Nanaue Sha'ark in Poseidonis, but they were quick to settle their differences after the Atlantean purist movement.
During the Atlantean purist movement, Rith’len could do little to help considering her age and lack of experience and knowledge of sorcery. In Tritonis she never faced this kind of hatred because nearly everyone had animalistic features. Rith’len hated the Atlantean pursuits for what they believed and how they acted. Not long after, Tula and Garth departed to the surface world to become heroes, leaving Rith’len to continue her studies under Mera. Rith’len began to idolize Kaldur, Tula, and Garth for using their power to help others. She began to strive to become a hero like them.
In early 2015, Rith'len was skilled in her studies and starting to learn more advanced skills of atlantean sorcery. She found out about Tula's death, which had struck her hard. Rith'len was never good with handling death, especially after her mothers demise to human's recklessness. She admired Tula's bravery and wiliness to sacrifice her life to save everyone around her.
Rith’len, having finished her studies, followed after her idols and joined the Team in 2017 at the age of sixteen and took the code name Abyss. This was not long after Orin had stepped down from being Aquaman and Kaldur stepped up. She headed to the surface world where she learned under Kaldur’ahm/Aquaman II. The surface world confused her, it was completely different to her life below the waves. She struggled with not being water consistently, having to adapt to being out of water for an hour at a time before eventually adapting to a few hours at a time. It took awhile for her to adjust especially considering her appearance and being out of water for long periods of time. Once Rith'len began opening herself up to her new teammates she became friends with Blue Beetle, Static, and Wondergirl. Despite the difference in her life, Rith'len was able to adapt and enjoyed being a hero, where she could help people who needed it. When Rith'len wasn't on missions with the team she was training with Garth, learning under him and his abilities. She picked up his skill to generate ice, though she was very inexperienced with it.
Rith’len declined to join the Outsiders in late 2018, during its formation. At the time, Rith'len wasn't ready to be a public hero, she hated the spotlight and she felt she needed more time to adjust to the surface world and to develop her skills for combat oriented.
In 2019, after Troia became the UN Secretary-General, she decided she was ready to be in the public eye. She stood in front of the UN and told her story of living in Tritonis and how humans recklessness of pollution and lack of empathy killed her mother and ravaged her home. Not long after she joined the Outsiders, to finally make a change in the world in the eyes of the public. She was nervous at first but knew it was the right thing to do. She became friends with Livewire, Terra, and Cyborg. Rith'len's skills were best demonstrated when she helped save civilians from the disasters of hurricanes, tsunamis, and floods. She also aided Kaldur in missions whenever she got the chance. During those missions she often contemplated if she wanted a future as a member of the justice league.
In 2021, Rith’len becomes a member of The Justice League.
