Genetics:
Dominant: red/orange pelt, dark legs
Recessive: blue eyes, striping
Carrier: amber eyes, golden coloration, brown fur
Personality:
Humble: Down to earth and modest, Raidon has never been one to overestimate his self importance. He's had to struggle and fight to the bone for any and all accomplishments he's made in his life. He was never supposed to make it in life. The beginning of his life was defined by his lack of worth and skill. This isn't to say he has no pride- he will swear up and down that he can see perfectly fine- just that he is well aware of his place in the world.
Stalwart: You will never find a cat more loyal and willing to work hard for a cause. He served the military with everything he had- answered to his captains with everything he had. He doesn't hold back anything and is certainly one that can be relied on. If he can accomplish an assignment he will. And if he can't he will die trying.
Stoic: Raidon keeps his emotions buried deep down. The hardships of training and war have taught him well to keep his weaknesses hidden. He's had to refrain from showing any signs of distress or pain for quite some time and he isn't likely to stop any time soon. He's incredibly hard to read and emotion doesn't often (if ever) show on his face.
Fearless: He isn't one to quake in the face of danger. Even in his weakened and visually impaired state, he doesn't flinch away from fights. This isn't to say he thinks he's invincible or isn't cautious, a lack of sight has forced him to walk much more slowly, feeling his way around. However war has taught him to be bold and conditioned him to have no fear of injury or death. It may appear as though he's numb to it all at this point.
Reserved: Not fond of meeting new people or being in crowds, Raidon is a quiet and somewhat antisocial individual. He can work with and get along with other cats just fine and has had to on multiple occasions for work, but he prefers not to talk a whole lot. Even when it comes to cats he's close to he still doesn't let in a whole lot about his thoughts and feelings and has a tendency- or some might say a bad habit- of keeping personal secrets.
Insecure: Raidon can be self-effacing at times. Not fond of praise or complements, he doesn't feel deserving of either. He knows that deep down he knows his work, but any confirmations of such by others tend to make the male uncomfortable. Particularly now in his injured and dismissed state.
Patient: Both in action and with training new recruits in the past, Raidon has proved his high levels of both tolerance and level headedness. He's never been one to rush into things whether that be in combat or in more social situations. He always takes a moment for careful consideration when he can. He is uncomplaining towards inconveniences and setbacks as nearly his entire life has been some combination of the two.
Intense: Raidon has yet to adapt to civilian life and this whole pet thing doesn't exactly suit him. He's a very serious cat and still has battle fresh on his mind and in his bones. While he might have a mile long patience, he also has a very militaristic attitude and doesn't know any other way to be. Varinia would rather not have him running around outside in his condition. Domestic life is the only option he has at this point and he certainly has a lot of learning to do about it.
Selfless: Raidon knows he wouldn't have gotten to where he is today without the help of others and he pays it forward. He would never hesitate to risk his own body and mind for the welfare of others and carrying with him an unselfish sense of service.
Apathetic: To out it quite simply, Raidon is depressed due to his forced retirement from the military and the sudden death of his owner and partner in arms. There is far less life to him than there used to be and he hasn't been particularly enjoying life since. Nothing makes him excited currently and he'd never say it but he feels a failure for not keeping his man safe, nor dying in battle with him as he feels he should have.
Virtuous: Raidon has incredibly high moral standards and deeply believes in standing up for folks and aiding those who may be weaker or less fortunate. He's a pretty proper boy and would never be rude nor sharp with anyone if he can help it, despite his distaste for many social situations.
Background:
Raidon was born in Egypt, the runt of a litter designated and bred for war. He was in the latter of his father's litters before heading back to the warfront. Smaller and weaker than the other cubs of his rather large litter, Raidon quickly failed to thrive and became a very sickly and unhealthy cub. A lost cause.
It was easy for his siblings to take up all their mother's energy and as they grew, Raidon became their weak punching bag if a brother. This was until a cub from his father's first litter, one a few months older than him, started taking an interest in Raidon's wellbeing. Karim was a frequent babysitter of their litter and as they approached their age of weaning and the day their harsh training would begin, Karim started helping Raidon as much as he could, knowing the humans would have no patience for such a weak cub and Raidon wouldn't have made it otherwise.
It still wasn't easy, and it was never going to be, but Raidon and Karim had each other. The harshness of his cubhood and the lack of belief from any of his piers had done their part to harden Raidon, however despite his somewhat harsh and grumpy demeanor he still sought out approval. Therefore when the two young caracals, hardly even a year old, were finally appointed to a squad, Raidon did everything he could to prove himself to the feline captain, Donovan. This went as well for the human partner he was assigned, however this man saw Raidon only for his weakness and drove him into the ground to further strengthen him. It wasn't uncommon for Raidon to receive beatings from his human when he didn't perform at the same levels of the bigger, stronger felines on the team.
This carried on for some time, until the man was accused of stealing supplies from camp and was forced to flee or be stoned. At this time, Raidon was left with Macario- Donovan's owner and partner- to find another suitable owner. That's when Raidon was assigned to Aristaeus Quirinius. He was a calm and level headed man, quite the change from Raidon's previous human. He was pleasant and also fell behind the others in terms of size and strength- something the two shared in common. He was nice to Raidon, he saw him as a partner and not a pet. Willing to pick up and carry the smaller caracal when it seemed he was lagging behind the march from exhaustion. The two got on well.
Then came one particular battle. It was quite possibly the worst the caracal brothers had found themselves in. He'd become separated from Aristaeus amidst the clashing of weapons and baying of war hounds. There was nobody he easily recognized from his troop in sight aside from his brother, by his side always.
The hounds were quickly overwhelming them and it became clear they'd need to make a break for a nearby tree. Raidon had raced up the tree and was turning to ensure his brother didn't fall, but Karim's leap was suddenly interrupted by the jaws of a dog that'd caught up to them. The canine tore his brother from the air. "NO!" Raidon made haste back down the tree as the hound bore down on his brother who wasn't struggling anymore, defending him with tooth and claw, managing by some miracle to stop his brother from being dragged off and torn apart before help managed to get to them.
By the time Karim awoke from his injuries it had become clear that he wouldn't be able to continue serving in the military. For the first time in his life, Raidon was separated from his brother, returning to the front, while Karim stayed behind in Egypt to become a breeder. While not entirely in a clingy manor, Raidon stuck closer to Donovan at this point, assisting him as much as he could with the other felines and occasional new recruit. This carried on for a year or so until tragedy struck again. In another horrible battle, both Donovan and Maca disappeared. And never came back.
It wasn't so long after this that the war came to an end. Raidon and Aristaeus remained in the military, stationed as peacekeepers in Egypt. However, this gave Aristaeus more time to visit with his lady friend, Varinia Antonius. Raidon was unfamiliar with the ways of man, but Aris had been attempting to court this woman for quite some time.. Raidon could see she made his human incredibly happy.
They kept the peace without issue for approximately a year before things went to shambles. Raidon was the only one yet to be struck personally by the tragedy of war and now was his time. Unrest had been gathering again in Aristaeus's sector and distain and hatred for the soldiers surprising them were growing. Aris and Raidon were retiring from their shift one night when they were jumped by a mob of armed civilians. Easily outnumbered the pair fell to the blows of the townsfolk. Aris was beaten to death. Raidon somehow managed to make it out with his life when the noise attracted the attention of other soldiers, but his eyes were badly damaged.
Field medics tended to his wounds and he fell into the hands of Varinia who was the only connection Aristaeus had had. Heartbroken by the loss of her lover, Varinia began the long trek to Massilia to meet up with her brother, taking the wounded, confused, and distressed Raidon with her. He knew what had happened to his human, but was less clear on what had happened to himself and spent a great deal of the voyage pawing at the bandages covering his face and eyes.
But he was bound for Massilia where he would be reunited with his brother and even Donovan.
