Description
I was surfing the net in a slight Phantom of the Opera mood and stumbled upon Mattel's brain child of a descendant of him. I thought she looked like the love child of Carlotta and Erik. Seriously. The big, puffy, fire engine red hair and a diva personality screams Carlotta. Then whatever made her related to Erik (being considered a monster, an apparent deformity and love of music)... Yeah.I figured Leroux was rolling around in his grave. I figured they could at least her look more like her father. Give her green or yellow skin instead of purple, make her eyes glow or at least two different colors.. If you are going to give her a deformity don't make them look like tattoos...
In thought of this I figured, well, maybe I should see what that would actually look like first.
Keeping her rockabilly theme in mind, I drew her in her Mattel pose mostly. I made her hair a dark purple since raven colored hair always comes to mind when I think of Erik. Keeping her original design in mind I had the streaks and fading part turn into a dark red. In a sense one could say I flipped the colors around.
I gave her green skin in the end, kept the makeup the same minus the lid eyeshadow a bit so her bi-colored eyes would be better enhanced. I considered making them glowing, but decided to keep it simple.
I emphasized the deformity making it more obvious as a "deformity" rather than tattoos. The tattoo concept survived some in her warped skin and is done in purple like the rest of the tattoos that can be seen running down her arm.
I changed her clothes some since well... >.O... I would have expected more black and white with a descendent of the Phantom. Yeah, yeah... not all kids turn out like their parents, but again it made enough sense to go with that theme since the original design does has some of the black and white motif. Mainly playing on the piano keys, spider webs and music notes, I looked up some psychobilly fashions and came up with the shirt she's wearing from various combinations.
Her pants are basically the same in their capri length and the hip accessory. I made them red though to indicate they aren't blue jeans and since it made more sense with the color scheme so far to me. Instead of rolled up hems, I replaced them again with the piano motif.
I skipped the dice altogether.
I didn't bother with the shoes since they were cool as they were.
So, do I think my concept is better? Not really. Do I think their concept is better? Not really. I'd probably have her started over from scratch truthfully, but as said, this is mainly just making various changes some small, some big to the original design.
Operetta is from the Monster High franchise and belongs to Mattel.
The art is by me.

I like your redesign. (Though I saw on the Operetta doll some of her "tattoos" were actually indented on her skin. Uhhhh, pretty scars, anyone?)

Yeah, I drew it when only the first picture of her appeared, where she is mask-less. At the time, they only looked like tattoos. Seeing the doll later on, I thought "Oh, so she does have scars... that looks like she either carved them into her flesh on her own or some psycho did it for her."
While it does redeem her some, like in the reply I gave Violetsorenson998 before you, I do think they could have made the carvings/indentations thicker and maybe color them in with a deeper purple - sort of like how rubber stamps work, only inverted in regards to the design. I think done that way would still be aesthetically pleasing while also making them more deformity-like as opposed to some intentional scar tattoos.
Even more... I think Operetta still looks nice/attractive even with the scars I drew. There is nothing particularly gory... just very textured. *Shrugs*

I agree, but mattel aims at a younger audience, so it was unrealistic to expect mattel to give her real burns, the only way they could make scars or burns is by making them all pretty , but i do prefer your version.

Agreed, but still, if DA has proven anything scars and burns can look aesthetically pleasing if done "right".
The scars/music notes she does have on her face could have been thicker and colored in on the stamping part, making them more noticeable and have more depth - sort of like enamel filled wire jewelry or stained glass. They still would have been pretty and not horrifying.
Yeah, though, the child aim. Oh well. That is what concepts and fan OOAK MH dolls are for!

MUCH better than Mattel's original design. I like the treble clef hidden in the face tattoo.
