Description
Goblins are small humanoid creatures of legendary cunning and adaptability.Β They come in many shapes and sizes, but are usually short in stature, and can be easily recognized by their over large bat like ears.Goblins are said to be able to survive in any location, and any environment in the world, they have a great ability to adapt to new environmental conditions. A single Goblin tribe can move to a new location, and within several short generations they will not only have adapted culturally and socially to their new environment, but will also have changed physically to better survive there.
This capability is a natural feature of the goblin physiology. AΒ jungle goblin (one of green skin) can move to the coast and begin living in (or next to) the water, and within two generations, it's descendants will become river goblins (with blue skin, webbed digits, fins etc).
This adaptability is a prodigious evolutionary advantage to the Goblin, and whilst Goblins are too many and varied to be easily defined, you can always be sure of one thing, wherever you go in the world, wherever you are and no matter how harsh the environment, there are likely to be Goblins already there.

Idea: Ice cave goblins. Blind but very woolly, like an eyeless teddy bear with big bat ears.

Yeah. Oh, and in necropoli and leper colonies, a race of Plague Goblins. Scabby,pus-filled, runny nosed, rheumy eyed, cyst and boil covered bloated toadlike creatures with ragged ears with holes in them, rotten teeth, and myiasis ridden bodies.

Yeah. What would lead an army of Plague Goblins, though? Maybe a Plague Troll, a Troll whose constant regeneration, coupled with a diet of Sewage, Graverobbed Corpses, and coupled with living in a lair of rotten remains of its prey, has created a constantly rotting and rejuvenating sack of pus and rippling muscle that is capable of rpiping apart entire regiments of human soldiers, whole archer formations of elves with its bloated hide just sucking the arrows in, and capable of unleashing horror if it crawls it's way up the sewer tunnels of an underground dwarven fortress-city, the tight confines and cramped nature of the city turning the once vibrant and cheerful halls of the mountain dwarves into a hideous abattoir.

Hehe, dude this sounds like you've got a pretty good idea on your own fantasy setting, and one that sounds pretty cool, albeit pretty dark too

am I the only one who doesn't think the guy looks like Stitch?Β (yes, he has solid black eyes, four digits per hand, and big ears...that's pretty much anything in D&D, mythology, and half of dA)Β
π: 0 β©: 1
Obhan In reply to Rodlox [2016-08-05 08:33:28 +0000 UTC]
He does look a tad similar to Stitch, but that's mostly just a coincidence, I checked out his design, but most of what he (the Goblin) looks like were dictated by his environment. In fact as good as they look I almost gave him normal Goblin ears, just so he wouldn't look so similar to Stitch.
After all, the character Uncle from the comic looks a lot like Yoda, but that's just coincidence too.
Like you say, there's so many fantasy creatures already in D&D, mythology, etc, and there's only so many combinations you can use :[

Hehe, nah man, like I said above his character design was one of the ones I checked out when designing the River Goblin, along with other short blue races like that, like the Trolls from Frozen, or those little beasties from Galaxy Quest

But yeh, pretty much everything about that movie was fun, aside from a few cringe worthy bits.

Yup, like I said above his design was one of the ones I researched when designing the river/water goblin.
I was a bit worried about making his design too similar (I don't want to just steal someone else's character design) so I've worked to make sure they are different enough in their own right and for logical reasons. For instance unlike Stitch he has no fur, but has a kind of rubbery shark like skin, also he has gills, webbed digits, that hair on top of his head is fin shaped to aid in aerodynamic swimming, and he has shark eyes to help him see under water.
All of this is because he has adapted to live in or even under water

I quite like this explanation for the prevalence of goblins.

It does kind of make them the bunny rabbits of the fantasy world, i.e. they get everywhere, survive pretty much anywhere, and multiply very quickly.
Also I guess it does explain the big ears

the male goblin looks like that character from that Disney movie, Stitch i think his name was.
Somehow i get the feeling the women are the more intelligent of the race, as she has invented pants

Obhan In reply to LordofFury [2016-07-28 09:24:55 +0000 UTC]
Oh yes, I studied the Stitch character design extensively when drawing the River/Water Goblin.
So much so in fact that I had to redraw his character several times before it was finished because I was worried that it was too similar to Stitch, especially with his floppy ears. I almost went with the more traditional sticking up bat ears Goblins usually have, but it just makes so much sense that a creature who evolved to spend more time in the water, would develop those kind of floppy back ears that wouldn't impede it's aerodynamic speed in the water.
That's why he has other characteristics to distinguish him from Stitch, like the gills, the webbed fingers and toes, or the fact that he has a kind of rubbery shark like skin rather than the all over body fur that Stitch has. All of which make evolutionary sense considering his water environment.

Well thanks dude, I don't know if its a sign that I genuinely care about building the fantasy world my comic is set in so that it's as realistic and relateable as possible... or if it's me being unnecessarily pedantic with tiny details and avoiding doing real work with random procrastination... or it could be both

Cheers man, I'm glad you think so
There are actually a couple more types of Goblin, but there was only space for two here, and there are still other races to draw. So I guess we'll have to wait to see them in the comic itself
