Description And here is the second and final KTS Race for this month, the Trolls.

The trolls probably most stretch the definition of what a 'civilised' race is in the KTS setting. These guys are incredibly primitive, and not much is known about them. This is not solely because they are dangerous creatures, but also because it is believed they don't have much of a culture at all.

They do not trade, they do not wage war, they don't seem to have much of a spoken language, and no written language at all.

If it weren't for the trinkets they hoard and the primitive clothing they cover themselves with, they could easily be mistaken for simple beasts.

But just because they are not advanced, they are not to be underestimated. They are incredibly dangerous, they live in small matriarchal packs of around a half dozen adults, and as many again juveniles. Mostly they stick to their own kind, but they have been known to raid other races and settlements from time to time, both on their own, and as parts of Dhukari raiding parties.

The Dhukari are one of the few races who can almost match the Trolls for strength, and so they alone might be able to attract the Trolls help in return for shiny things, which the Trolls covet.

An odd fact, Troll babies are actually surprisingly docile and cute little furry creatures, it is only when they grow older than they become more aggressive. It was a very short lived fashion in the imperial realm for juvenile Trolls to be owned as pets and kept by members of Imperial Court as a fashion statement. This trend ended as the Trolls started to age and... well, began tearing off limbs when they got upset

Maybe I've been watching too much "Tales of Arcadia", but do these trolls turn to stone in daylight?

I haven't seen that show, but these are KTS Trolls, and they do not turn in to stone in daylight. Which I'm sure they're incredibly happy about

It's a great show and indeed; that is something to be happy about.

ah, so the KTS trolls are like the LOTR orcs - only with even less language.

did any/many of those raised-from-infancy trolls ever adopt the Imperial culture?Β  (troll librarians or troll bookies or troll gardeners?)

great work.

Obhan In reply to Rodlox [2017-09-05 10:43:00 +0000 UTC]

Well I'm not sure about the LOTR Orcs, I always thought they were pretty primitive, but they can speak a language, organise themselves into large groups, even into large armies, and in the new Shadow of War game, there's even going to be a good, kinda 'untainted' orc... so who knows.

But yeh as for this setting, no these guys are super primitive... not that that's a bad thing, they don't have a spoken language, or much of one, and can't really speak in other mortals tongues, so any kind of daily interaction would be extremely difficult, so no, no librarians or gardeners or the like.

If the Troll were super smart and disciplined they might make for a good bouncer or gladiator... but more often than not, they'd likely end up in a zoo of some kind

Rodlox In reply to Obhan [2017-09-06 03:49:17 +0000 UTC]

one of the Appendixes says that LOTR Orcs hate language and will butcher it any time they speak it...even so, they do have their own language (given by Sauron) Β with its writing system, and will use human language if the orcs have divergent dialects.

hm, sign language is out too? Β I'm just thinking aloud, sorry.

>an untainted orc
ah, so an elf. Β
(kidding)

very cool info about your trolls; thanks.

Hehe, I got that reference at least (about untainted Orc = Elf), but I gotta admit the rest I've never heard of.

Are the Appendixes and additional books written on the LotR trilogy by Tolkein hard to read? I've always wanted to get into them and learn more about the setting, but the main books themselves are just so hard to parse.

sorry.

I've avoided the Appendixes about families and who is related to who & the depth of historyΒ  (such as the sunken lands Sauron corrupted - so I'm told)...but the Appendixes that I did readΒ  (mostly the ones about the languages, and how all the characters' names are actually translated versions)Β  are easier.

Do these trolls regenerate injuries?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Obhan In reply to TheWolfJarl [2017-09-01 10:22:40 +0000 UTC]

They do, but only to a certain extent, like cuts and scrapes and scars will definitely regenerate over time, but if a Troll loses a limb, I'm not sure yet if it'll grow back.

Just curious since I'm also working on a fantasy setting, a novel in my case, which also has trolls. In my case trolls belong to the same biological taxonomic category as goblins, orcs and ogres (aka goblinoids), being the result of crossbreeding between demons and goblinoids (goblin making cave trolls, orc mountain trolls and ogres ice trolls). Due to their demonic heritage, these trolls can regenerate full body parts in time, and the new body part, much like a mended bone, will be stronger than the one severed. This doesn't apply if either the heart is destroyed or the head is removed, from which a troll will die like any other creature. The trick is of course how you're going to get such a large creature to stay still. Ice trolls in particular, which are as tall as mammoth and have a hide that's over 5mm thick.

Sounds very interesting dude, looks like you've thought out your own fantasy setting very well

TheWolfJarl In reply to Obhan [2017-09-02 14:18:29 +0000 UTC]

Thank you. To add some design diversity to the generic orc/goblin/ogre/troll designs, I made them digitigrade, goblins being based somewhat on rabbits, orcs wolves and ogres a sort of ursine and bull hybrid. These traits carried over to trolls; cave trolls being smaller than the other two sub-species, but burly, with long ears, angled heads, and scaly hides, mountain trolls being very bestial, flat-nosed werewolf looking creatures with green fur, and mountain trolls being huge, burly, fuzzy and with big horns on the males.

Huh that is a pretty novel take on the fantasy creatures, tying each to an existing animal influence in their design.

I'm surprised you didn't go for Pigs/Warthogs for Orcs, since I think that's a classic design influence for them.

TheWolfJarl In reply to Obhan [2017-09-04 14:43:59 +0000 UTC]

Believe me: I considered it. But then I thought that it'd feel generic and cliche, so instead I looked into things like D&D monster manuals and even regular animals, and since I have this fascination with wolves, while not really considering putting werewolves into this particular setting, I first considered what it'd look like if orcs had a sort of flat, canine-esgue nose (albeit with the same skin texture as the rest of the body), and then the digitigrade idea just came to me like a flash. Even the bit about goblins, orcs, ogres and trolls being related was an afterthought I just ended up liking it, plus other tidbits like hobgoblins being offspring between goblins and orcs.

Though one thing I feel I need to change is the term "demon". I feel with the Warcraft franchise being as big as it is and demons having an overall wide presence in the fantasy and RPG realms as a whole. So I'm trying to come up with a new term for these creatures. I considered "deva" first, but given that deva is the term for divine beings in Hindu mythology, I scrapped that immediately.

"daemon" maybe?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 2

TheWolfJarl In reply to Rodlox [2017-09-05 13:21:31 +0000 UTC]

Eh, that's pretty much just Latin for demon. My wife did suggest "hellion". I like the ring of it since hellion means something that causes trouble, and since these beings are supposed to be the cosmic personifications of everything evil, from lawful, to neutral, to chaotic.

Rodlox In reply to TheWolfJarl [2017-09-06 03:51:23 +0000 UTC]

oh...my bad, sorry. Β (in my defense, i thought "demon" came from the word "daemon")

sounds interesting; hope to hear more in time.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

TheWolfJarl In reply to Rodlox [2017-09-06 13:52:21 +0000 UTC]

(Well you're technically correct, since "daemon" is the original Latin for "demon".)

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 0

Obhan In reply to Rodlox [2017-09-05 10:45:40 +0000 UTC]

That's what I'm actually doing in this setting.

There are possibly 'Demons', basically just beings from other worlds or planes, some of which might look like the usual demon goat person Satyr/Draenei lookalike, or maybe not.

But there are also 'Daemons', and they are much, much more different, like, Cthulhu like entities from beyond reality itself... so yeh that's going to be fun

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Rodlox In reply to Obhan [2017-09-06 03:50:31 +0000 UTC]

I think I remember you putting Draenei in...or was that another project?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Obhan In reply to Rodlox [2017-09-06 20:32:51 +0000 UTC]

Well we can't put Draenei in, because I'm pretty sure they are protected IP.

But yeh they would be that kind of race that are found in bunches of fantasy fiction, the other worldy outside race, that might come from a distant land, world or plane of existence.

Kinda like the Tieflings in DnD, the Draenei in Warcraft, the Beastmen in Warhammer, the Qunari in Dragon Age, and so on.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Rodlox In reply to Obhan [2017-09-07 04:37:38 +0000 UTC]

well, Draenei-ish, just in appearance...as in humanoids with rams horns, curled to varying degrees.

Yeh well those types of figures exist in many fantasy settings, like in all the examples above.

Baby Troll Pets?Β  Seriously?

Obhan In reply to Rassilon001 [2017-08-31 10:18:03 +0000 UTC]

Ayup!

It was one of those stupid fashions for the incredibly rich, and after all the little trolls were super cute, and they could be trained to perform simple tricks... but eventually they all grew up

They didn't all end up badly though, one of the baby trolls was given as a pet to an Imperial Elf Princess, when she herself was just a child and the pair bonded, and now the Troll serves as her sort of guard dog. She's part of a story I want to show sometime in the comic
