Description Okay, this is seriously a collection of bits and pieces I remember from class, from books, and from my own experience. It's kind of a jumbled up mess. Sorry.

Now, I'm thinking that I'm not going to make many more dark-background tutorials. I mean, dang. *shakes head* All of that white-on-black is starting to get to me...

These tutorials are exceptional! I really like how you referenced actual people's clothing, too

I figured that would be the best way to teach, seeing as we get these movements from real life. Thank you so much!

You are my savior with this! I've just started trying to bring up the quality of my renderings, and the folds (and collars, and feet!) have been my biggest issues lately, and this is just fantastically useful!

Is there a difference between folds and wrinkles? Do they follow the same 'behaviour' on drapery? thanks

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Obi-quiet In reply to the-merriest [2009-07-31 05:45:25 +0000 UTC]

Depends on your definition. A fold is where you deliberately double back on anything, while a wrinkle is usually unintended (which is why they're so hard to draw). Every wrinkle could technically be a fold, but every fold isn't a wrinkle, see?

the-merriest In reply to Obi-quiet [2009-07-31 21:32:32 +0000 UTC]

Ok, that doesn't make too much sense sorry. So a fold and a wrinkle are similar? when your drawing drapery how do yuou know you should draw a fold not a wrinkle or vice versa?

Also do you know what is a good way of practicing drapery? ' practice makes perfect' so I wondering what approach I can take? Attempt to copy clothed figuires, draw one from memory/inmagination, or just draw clothes without a figuire in them?

Hope I'm not iritiating you, I just like to ask when I don't udnerstand. I've been using your excelllent tutorials as my main source of knowledge of drawing clothing. lol
please reply, thank you
will

Obi-quiet In reply to the-merriest [2009-08-01 05:26:08 +0000 UTC]

Sorry. A wrinkle is a type of fold. Other folds are usually deliberate, like folding your laundry, or folding material over to hem something. I usually just draw wrinkles unless I want a really obvious change of direction, and then I will use a fold. Don't think too much on it. Just draw what comes natural, and you'll be fine.

The best way is to find figures here on DA (go to the DA Home page, then click on 'resources' at the right, 'stock images' and then choose your category from there). THe more you draw the figure without the clothes, the more you'll know where things hang. If worst comes to worse, look in a mirror and see if you can figure it out by imitating what you want to do.

Thanks. That made sense.
When you draw folds is it better to draw the main (big folds) in and then add the smaller wrinkles later? k thx

Obi-quiet In reply to the-merriest [2009-08-01 20:55:42 +0000 UTC]

Depends on the cloth and how thin you want to make it look. Most people have to find their own way to do that one. Sorry.

Ah, I see. Well, that can be confusing, but I'll try to be more specific next time.

^___^ YAY CLOTHING TUTORIAL!

Yes, this is exactly what I was looking for. ^_^ Whenever my sister tried to show me how she did clothing, she did everything with shading. o.o which I cannot do without it looking dumb and mostly black. xD So this is awesome and wonderful.

I, uh... admit that the 'displacement' wrinkles still throw me off a bit. But, like you said, just let the pencil do whatever and do damage control later, right? That's one thing about wrinkles, is that because they're random, there's no one way to be right in how to draw them...

And yay, pants next! ^__^ This shall also be much helpful to me.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Obi-quiet In reply to Daricio [2008-11-22 02:13:25 +0000 UTC]

Just because I do something one way does NOT mean it's the best way! I'd really encourage you to be more decisive and confident in yourself than I am!

I am, however, very glad to help.

Johnny-Spectre [2008-11-21 22:31:16 +0000 UTC]

clothing is probably one of the hardest parts in designing a character. you can't always go for the one-piece jumpsuit (even if they're superheroes), sometimes the look has to be relaxed.

like my super OC, Johnny Spectre (note: no hyphen means it's my character): I gave him blue jeans and a white t-shirt with his symbol on the chest and a black leather jacket. he looks like a greaser, but he can be pretty classy when he wants to be.
