Description
fired Terracotta clay, 17" tall(WIP here: fav.me/dd1vbe2 )
This figure is about 50% larger than the "Ascension" figure I posted a little while ago, which means about three or four times as technically nerve-wracking!
I was not originally intending this, but I realized that this figure goes with the "Water" ( fav.me/dcyu9qy ) figure, creating a series of The Four Elements -- Earth, Wind, Water, and Fire. Still working on the other elements. )
EDIT: Yikes! A little behind with all that's been going on IRL (not "bad", but definitely crazy) that I didn't even see the DD. THANKS TO ALL! (This is just my second DD here!)

Please trust I intend it only as a compliment... but from the thumbnail, I thought that was chocolate.

HA!! Seriously, you are not the first one to say this.
Yeah, that would be quite an accomplishment to make it in chocolate.... and yes, I agree that the color is totally sweet.

It would indeed. But think as far as accomplishments go, this one provides for more lasting enjoyment.
Stay strong!

Gorgeous! The seemingly effortlessly fluid movement you manage to convey in your sculptures is breathtaking!

the funny part is just much hair I ended up tearing out trying to get this piece to physically come together and not collapse under its own weight. She almost fell over under the heat of the kiln on the second fire. That lovely flowing curve in the drape is actually a very important structural component. What was really fun though was creating the swooping texture of the garment as it gently flows around her body. That is a technique I will continue to work on.
Thank you, as always!

Woooaaahhh!
This is amazing! The "clothing" details are amazing!
What type of clay is this? It looks very smooth to sculpt.

It's a terra cotta clay which comes from Georgia (Highwater "Earthen Red" to be precise). It is wonderfully smooth and glossy, though that means it has no grog to give it more physical strength, so it can be horrible to build anything of size and have it hold up!! I've mostly fallen in love with the deep, warm color.
If you Google, "transparent illusion in sculpture", you'll see lots of examples from classical and more modern sculpture. I'm just starting to get the hang of it.

Thanks! Just getting the hang of this illusion of transparency. There are a lot of sculptors who take this effect to amazing lengths, making marble sculptures seem like you can see right through them.

This is fantastic. I love the fabric and contouring. Oh my heck! I just realized what your style reminded me of. I've been looking at it and can't place a finger on it and it's been hitting me over the head going dum dum! Some of the older renaissance pieces use a lot of those textures and styles you use.
Stuff like this where they make the fabric blend into the body like sheer material, contouring, even the way you carve the eyes is resembling the styles common in sculpture.

Wow in this case I think if that is what you were going for you are certainly nailing it in some of the sculptures with material/fabrics.

Yes, exactly! I wouldn't quite call it, "nailing it", but getting close. I have the basic idea, but the REAL masters had an insane understanding of how fabric folds and falls across the body, and I still have a long way to go on that. If you look at my "Water" sculpt, that was my first real attempt at the effect.
Needless to say, it's a really cool effect when done right!

I need work in that department as well. Fabric is very hard to master. In art and well art in fashion design.

Yup. One of these days I want to attend some of Sue's Quilt Guild meetings, and maybe even make a small one myself. In the mean time, lots to practice in the clay version of fabric!"
