Description
Fired Terracotta clay, 10" tallI just realized that I'd never posted this piece as finished. (See the WIP at: fav.me/dbe1kak )
As a number of my figure sculptures were broken during a storm in the spring of 2017, I set out to re-create some of my favorites. There is always a tension between trying to exactly reproduce the original, and trying to expand on the idea which the original grew out of.
“An artist is not someone who draws or paints. An artist is someone who sees and hears what others do not see or hear.”

Thank you. It was interesting how her pose developed as I worked with the clay. Kind of conversation back and forth, especially with the turn of her head, and the twist of her toes.

I totally get your struggle with recreating and artwork, often after an artwork is gone we tend to forget the mistakes and remember it as "the perfect piece" and it's harder to be satisfied with the new one.

Yeah, even when we have photos to remember. I also find that every piece has this "tearing my hair out", frustrating period in the middle, between the rush of the initial great idea, and the point where the clay quits flopping around and begins to cooperate, and I can settle into the details.
What I try to do is let each piece create its own journey, even if it is an extension or expansion of a previous piece. Even with my "little birds", each one has its own unique personality.

I like how you've managed to sculpt even the small details like the fingers and toes, I myself struggle with these details.

Yeah, those are often the last little bits I work on. I sometimes use two pairs of reading glasses on top of each other to get enough magnification to see! That, and some really tiny tools.

She is totally absorbed in the feelings of whatever pleasant sound she is listening to.

Thank you! Just submitted her to a Juried Art Show (along with a couple of her closest friends ), so we'll see how that goes!
