This piece was just purchased by a very good friend, before I'd even finished firing it! This friend had just been through a very difficult year, and when she saw the WIP photo I put up on Facebook, she said that it spoke so directly to her heart that she immediately downloaded it to use for the background on her phone, and then bought it from me (paid good money for it!) when it was done.
It's still blows my mind when something so simple that I create can cause such a response of comfort and hope in someone else. That's what art does...

This is a nice piece. I'm the art editor for www.quantummuse.com and I was looking for a few new artists to showcase in the upcoming monts. This piece stopped me.
I collect too and studied traditional drawing at the Art Students League many years ago. This is a good one and so are the others. They really convey feelings and bring out personal emotions.

Thank you Rick! I've never really had a chance to formally study, but have basically taught myself by paying attention and always practicing. I spend a lot of time listening to people, and then trying to portray that in my art.

There's more to art than popularity... but it is good to be noticed.

Recognition is nice, for the right reasons, it is even nicer.
I'm not asking for "popularity". What I appreciate is recognition of a well made piece of art that triggers a strong response from the viewer. That usually means we artists have done our job correctly. What interested me was the sociological response of comment-less favorites. It was as though that since the piece had been given a DD, it was therefore "good art" and should be "faved" for that reason alone. The idea of "being told to like something" for any reason and having people do it, in my little paranoid mind, is likened to "swallow this, its good for you"...... Bad things can happen then.

Well said. Even the simple "Beautiful!" comments at least took someone a moment to stop and type that in. I'd rather have someone tell me, "This piece impacted me because of ...", but I'll take what I can get. On most comments, I will at least try to go over to the person's gallery and poke around to see what they are doing and what they like, and if possible, leave my own comment on one of their pieces. Maybe it will start a conversation. Maybe it'll get them to thinking...
One can hope.

The original concept for this piece ( observer14.deviantart.com/art/… ) actually came out of a one-on-one tutoring time I had with a young artist I know in this area (Atlanta). She was pretty young, but extremely deep in her own experience. She made a similar piece with the hands, but put a different symbol in the middle -- one which had particular meaning for her. I was impressed at how well she did, though it took more than 10 hours of instruction.
So yes, I've done classes at all levels on working with sculpture, and in particular, on creating hands, although I have found that there is a depth of life experience which you need to bring on your own.
