I always wondered (but was too lazy to look up) who Setzer was and where he was from.
Now I know.

Oh, man! Setzer! I hated this guy! No, I mean, I hated using him in my party. He seemed like an okay sort for a kidnapping, woman hungry, danger seeking, gambling addict, and he really helped the party out in a few jams. But he had that Slots mechanic that could randomly kill the entire party. Once I learned that could happen, he was out on his ass. I don't take kindly to characters that can accidentally kill my entire party when using their special attack.

Our college campus had a main building for clubs and meetings called the Setzer Center. I thought about this guy EVERYTIME I went there. Would have been even better if his theme played in that building all the time.

Kinda sad how I never really appreciated Setzer as a character until long after I beat the game. Though I never really was a fan of his use in combat, regardless of the loaded dice combo.

...alright, I NEVER use this guy. I hate roulette abilities, and once again, it shows how utterly and ridiculously useful some abilities are to the point of other abilities being why-is-this-even-a-choice. Setzer is such a non-character that I think of him as "airship!" and I'm sure the other characters do too. "Wait, this guy has an airship and wants to kidnap a woman because he's obsessed with her? Well this guy's a DOUCHE, lets just steal his airship!" and everyone unanimously gives the thumbs-up. Also, instead of the 2-sided coin thing where they "win" his airship - with Celes "wagering" her hand in marriage - lets just change that up to:
"Here's the deal, Setzer: We've been traveling and learning magic for a bit now, so we're goddamn POWERHOUSES. Celes alone could pound you into flatbread, make a panini, and feed you to our ninja's pet dog. He's not here now, but he will be later, so help me, and if you don't just hand over this airship, we'll also call Tifa over here to SMASH THEM as well. We clear? Good. Now get out."

we all loved this guy for his Airship and the black jack theme is one of my favorite tunes in the game

Sadly, all I know of him is when Roxas hands him his butt in KH2.

He's pretty fun mid-game. Late-game his only use is to be thrown by Umaro.

Setzer's cool and all, but I was so disappointed by his Kingdom Hearts 2 appearance, where he goes from a devil-may-care gamblin' badass to a prettyboy that has to bribe a 14-year old boy to lose to him.

He was a bizarre choice to represent FF6, but Nomura picking his own character makes it far less shocking. It certainly sucked for variety's sake since he looked like any Sephiroth or any character that was already in the game (See: all the Nobodies). I think Nomura even had to change his hair so he didn't already look like someone else.

No. But the first time I learned of his history concerning Daryl, that really hit me. Especially with the musical score referred to as 'Epitaph' to accompany it, followed by 'Searching for Friends' when the Falcon took to the skies for the first time in years.
