Description Daily Pokémon Doodle #141, Kabutops! It's crazy to think I'm only 10 pictures away from having finished the whole Kanto 'dex...

Anyway, Kabutops! What a badass - easily my favourite of the first-gen fossils. Also it looks a lot like some kind of ancestral relative to Scyther, and I love the hell out of Scyther. It's sometimes easy to forget it's half Water-Type, it always feels like a Rock/Bug to me!

What about you guys? Which first-gen fossil Pokémon do you like most?

I'll always prefer Kabutops over Omanyte and Omastar. :3

Especially ever since Twitch Plays Pokémon ruined the latter two for me. ;w;

Definitely my favorite fossil pokemon, I love how you captured it here. It is really easy to forget it's half water, and nobody ever seems to depict it in water like this. This looks great! The pose is cool, the light effects are awesome, the bubbles are super good o:! I like that the water seems murky too, that's a nice detail.

Well to be fair, it is hard to imagine how kabutops to would swim much less fight underwater

Thank you so much, I'm glad you like it! I think Kabutops has to be one of my favourite fossils (if not my top favourite!) as well, it's just such an interesting design and I love how it looks. There really needs to be more underwater Kabutops art if you ask me, haha!

Kabutops has always frightened me (It reminds me of the monsters in Mimic for some reason), but I must admit it has an awesome design.
I love how the bubbles shimmer btw :3

Haha, I have to say, Kabutops is pretty fearsome-looking. And thank you! I can't get enough of digipainting bubbles. xD

Haha, absolutely. It's got such a great design, imo - I might be a little biased because of the similarity to Scyther, though! It was definitely a fun challenge to draw - interesting and tricky in equal measure. c:

As I mentioned on the Kabuto, these are my fav fossils of gen 1.
Good work on him, nice to see one that is in the water swimming for a change ^_^

I'm glad you like him! Yeah, I noticed there's hardly any underwater art of Kabutops - I guess because it's kinda weird to pose underwater, I definitely found that aspect kind of tricky. But I really wanted to tie it in with my Kabuto picture, and to actually give a nod to the Water-Type side of Kabutops which is so easy to forget.

I always kinda liked Kabutops, it just looked really cool for some reason. I like how you made the cracks n' such on the head and arms, kinda makes it feel more like the fossil Pokemon it's supposed to look like, I guess, y'know? Also like how you're doing the shading and lighting for the bubbles and the background and such for these last few, it's really awesome how it looks, really! .u.
I agree, I used to think it was a Rock/Bug type before I found out it's not, just, it looks kinda like a Scyther, how is it not a bug? .C.

Yeah, I agree, it's got a really neat design - that's pretty much what sold it for me as my favourite gen one fossil. And thank you! I feel like a Pokémon like Kabutops deserves to be depicted a little rocky and battle-weathered. The bubbles were my favourite part of drawing this, haha. (Then again, bubbles are my favourite part of any picture with bubbles in, they're so weirdly relaxing to paint.) I'm glad you like them! c:

Yeah, it does look like a Rock/Bug, doesn't it? I've always theorised that it's some kind of ancestral relative of Scyther - the physical similarities are just too striking! Maybe Kabutops never died out, it just moved onto land and 'evolved'...

Wingman2014 In reply to oddsocket [2015-02-10 22:06:22 +0000 UTC]

No problem! Bubbles look so fun to draw, they always look all squishy and stuff XD

Yeah, it could be, y'know? Maybe just cousins or something, but that could be a good possibility, also have you ever noticed it kinda looks like Genesect if you look at it correctly? XD

Haha, oh, they are! It's probably why they're the only thing I've finished a real tutorial on so far. (Although my other tutorials ARE finally coming together a little!)

Yeah, now you say it I can see the similarities - the head shape in particular with how wide and flat it is.

I should try to draw them sometime then, I guess XD
