The fact that people would keep requesting me stuff even if I closed them annoys me that I melt down. Good grief it atopped happening.

Somebody once asked me to do something that would be beyond my scope and that I wouldn't be into anyway. Totally using.

I only do requests when time allows, or when it's a special event or something that warrants it. Lately I've been keeping them limited to my Discord server, 'cause it's the kind of requests I "like" (as in, the requests are based on things me and buddies do during gaming events).
I'm so glad this stamp was made. XD I feel like no matter how many times my watchers are told that I only do commissions, request offers still get made.

I only do free requests for my friends only, otherwise I don't do them at all! It's annoying when peeps don't read my damn profile bio and ask me out of the blue.

I digs where this person is coming from. I have written like three or four journal entries about me and requests. Apparently nobody reads journals because I keep getting requests for stuff every now and again. If it's a first time, I'll be calm about it. If it's a "repeat offender," that's when I lose the cool. How many times does a person have to be told that you don't do requests? Seriously . . . . .
Ahem. Anyway, this is a great stamp.

I don't take requests either but i dont think its rude for people to ask.
maybe it is if the person has it all over their profile that they dont and the person still asks but isn't being rude back to them fighting fire with fire? They probably asked because they liked your art so take it as a bloody compliment and just tell them no. I doubt anyone i saw here complaining gets more than 1 requests related question a week; that isnt exactly a flood in your inbox you have to deal with for hours.
boo hoo 30 seconds out of my day for an ego boost.
in my case, i love doing free art for people but i also take commissions so it wouldnt be fair for the people who paid me to do art then me doing it for free.
So i just offer kiribans when im not busy.
People say that its rude to ask for requests. its just part of the community of online artists, and its expected.
Someone might ask you to do something for them, and you'll find it rude. But then you might go get inspiration off someone elses art or use stock photos from here or tutorials, and those people inadvertently did things for YOU.
This isn't saying its an obligation to do free art for people, do what you want. But don't think your art is some precious thing that no one else deserves. Because i guarantee you have been influenced a lot by other peoples art here, just like people may be influenced by you.

not really rude, but more just kind of ignorant. art is a luxury product. some people will do it for free and some people will not, like me. have you ever gone to a bake sale and went "hey can i hab dis 4 free??" no.

this dude has no idea what he is talking about.
i doubt this applies to many people on deviantart who are hobbyists and dont plan to make careers for their art. Nor is drawing peoples characters for them really getting your art out there anyway. (they'll fave it once and then it wont really be looked at again?) and drawing their ideas isnt really giving away yours..
I'm only disagreeing with you not to try and get people do to free art (its your choice), but to not spread the wrong message to people.
sometimes if you want to have a career as an artist or designer you have to work for free. This is something my graphic design teachers have told me. Lots of employers dont like seeing school/college work in your portfolio, and only showing your own doesnt show you can work to a brief or any of the important processes of working for a client.
Recently i did as my teachers suggested and did some volunteer logos for small businesses and causes groups. This means they got a logo in exchange for sharing my details to their friends and anyone else interested and giving me real commission work for my portfolio and a referee for further employment.
you should consider these factors in the future c:

I help pay my rent and bills through my artwork, so I don't really have time to make any artwork that won't bring in a profit that isn't either personal or for my girlfriend. Personally, I think it's kind of rude to request something from an artist, at least if you don't know them personally. In my mind, requesting something is the same as saying "hey you don't know me and I can't really give you a good reason to do this, but would you give me free art?" Art is a skill and a trade. Asking for free art is like asking for free shoes at Walmart, or a free scarf at some street vendor. Some people are cool with it, I understand this, but to me asking something like that is a little too forward and kinda inconsiderate. Plus if all I do is requests and/or trades, eventually no one will commission me because they'll realize I'll do free art for them if they wait long enough or harass me to do it. So I always say no to requests and I'm really picky about trades.
Nice stamp. I really like it!

Great stamp. I don't think one should expect an artist to take time & effort out of their day to draw something for a random stranger over the internet anyway. Very annoying, frankly. (Of course if the artist is okay with it then go for it.)

I can't agree with you more. I used to take requests, but then people started asking me more and more for requests when I didn't have the time to do them. I kinda felt like people were USING me to make every drawing their request. Really, my gallery is just full of requests and old junk now. That's why I'm planning to move soon, so I can make a fresh start.
By the way, there should be a plz of this!

Totally agree, its not very nice when u post stamps or messages in bold and easy to see places saying you dont take requests, and then people ignore it :< It only takes a second to actually check a persons profile, you expect people with hgih standards of art to take them really either...it takes so much time especially for someone you dont know

My friend does requests and is a good artist. She's really not very well known, though... hence why she's only done, like, 5 or fewer requests ever.
