the Cowen Class was originally introduced as a carrier version of the Acastus-Kolya-Class battleships during the 1st ETA-Mandrillus War.
because, during this conflict, most of the Genii weapon systems proved ineffective against the Mandrillus Battle Beast
the KIFIS-17 "Dahna Na" interceptors alone were really efficient
however, the CPF did not have a fleet carrier at that time, the CPF consisted only of Tyrus-Class patrol ships (destroyers), Ladon-Radim-Class warships (cruisers) and Acastus-Kolya-Class battleships.
the largest hangar capacity at that time was the Acastus-Kolya-Class, with eighteen squadrons of interceptors.
however, due to the tactical and strategic situation, the battleships had to be used for the defence of the ETA worlds and could therefore only be used for offensives to a limited extent
also, the battleships were preferred targets of the Mandrillus due to their strong self-armament, since the destruction of an Acastus-Kolya-Class brought great prestige to the crew of a Battle-Beast
in this situation, the CPF benefited from its method of segmented shipbuilding, which had already been described for the cruisers.
ETA ships consist of standardised segments: Engine segment, Weapon segment, Command/Rotation segment, Hangar segment and Sensor segment. These can be easily assembled into the required vessels at any standard CPF shipyard
however, until the 1st ETA-Mandrillus War, the CPF had only made use of this advantage in the construction of warships/cruisers, and so various versions of the Ladon-Radim-Class had been developed and deployed.
Tyrus- and Acastus-Kolya-Class, on the other hand, existed in only one version each (not counting individual special productions for special operations)
now the Genii are using this advantage to turn the heavily armed Acastus-Kolya-Class battleships into a lightly armed fleet carrier in record time
priority was also given to equipping the new carriers with the newly developed WLT-08 "Prato" Heavy Escort Ship, which has its own hyperdrive and thus massively extends the search radius of its mother ship.
in fact, it had not been the task of these ships, initially still called Kolya-Class Carriers, to engage in battle against Battle Beasts themselves, but the Carriers only served as mobile bases for the "Dahna Na" and "Prato" squadrons, which were the actual attack weapons against the Mandrillus
the carriers proved so effective that they were made a class of ship in their own right in the years between the 1st and 2nd ETA-Mandrillus wars
the ships, now called Cown-Class, were also equipped with the latest technical developments for the fight against the Mandrillus and their Battle-Beasts
so in the 2nd Eta-Mandrillus War the brunt of offensive operations continued to be on the Cowen-Class
these early decades still characterise the Cowen-Class today
it would be an exaggeration to claim that the Cowen class is a starship class specialised in the fight against the Mandrillus
like any military, the Genii are aware that such a highly specialised capital ship would be militarily absurd.
the Cowen-Class can also be used efficiently against conventional opponents
nevertheless, it cannot be denied that the development of the Cowen class and its equipment has always been, and continues to be, with a particular focus on combating Mandrillus
the Cowen-Class, even before the Kolya-Class, is the test platform for the latest technical developments of the ETA
which led to the Cowen-Class setting the record for the most version numbers in the shortest time (17 versions in 78 years).
for example, the first Kolya-Class Carriers, now called Cowen-Class Mk I, were armed almost like the original Kolya-Class, except that the weapon segments were shortened to be able to build more ships and due to lack of space the SR-16/57 heavy plasma cannon turrets were replaced by a smaller number of the smaller SR-16/23 standard plasma cannon turrets
the current Mk XVII of the Cowen-Class is equipped with the latest technical achievements of the Genii in addition to the standard armament, which absolutely still has its justification (keyword conventional opponents).
the latest developments include the MI11 "Miapi Inesto" heavy railgun, which can fire, among other things, special anti-battle beast grenades, but also standard anti-battle ship ammunition in 320 mm calibre.
the NA-1318 "Botus" missile launchers, which can fire a capital ship version of the "Gopre" and "Kolgo" anti-battle beast missiles developed for the fighters, in addition to the standard "Tuslan" anti-capital ship missiles
due to the "Botus" launchers, the Cowen-Class has a massively reinforced missile armament compared to the Acastus-Kolya-Class, while the turret armament of the Mk XVII has become almost equally powerful.
the Mk XVII features the new MMP0852 armour, which has a much higher melting point than the CPF's standard MAP0825 ship armour, giving the Mk XVII improved durability against the Mandrillus' "magma cannons
the MDD-2861 ion-drive, introduced since the Mk IX of the Cowen-Class, is a more powerful version of the LC-7100 ion-drive, which is still in use with the Acastus-Kolya-Class
thanks to the MDD-2861 ion-drive, the Cowen-Class has the highest acceleration values of all CPF ships
an enormous advantage over the relatively low acceleration values of the Battle Beast, so it is only a matter of time before the Kolya-Class is also equipped with this engine after the shortcomings of the prototypes of this technology have been overcome
and last but not least, the very latest technical development of the Genii, the "Dahratus" UARAVs and "Miapi Dahratus" HUAAVs, unmanned aerospace crafts, a concept the CPF adopted from the Tau'ri a few years ago.
in the development of these unmanned spaceships, the CPF has abandoned its otherwise proverbial reticence and, with the "Dahratus" and the "Miapi Dahratus", has finally proved to all doubters that the ETA/Genii are indeed among the most technically advanced nations in the known universe (aka Local Group).
the Cowen-Class will be exclusively equipped with UARAVs and HUAAVs
in addition to their armament, however, the type of deployment of the Cowen-Class is also shaped by the focus on use against Mandrillus
the fleet carriers of the other military powers of the Local Group always operate within at least within a carrier group, i.e. one carrier with an escort of 5-10 capital ships, one of which is always a battleship.
More often, however, fleet carriers operate within large fleets
the Cowen-Class, on the other hand, usually acts completely alone, at most with an escort consisting of a single patrol ship and warship
this should improve the ability to search a large volume of space for Mandrillus signs
consequently, the Cowen-Class is a conventional carrier that does not have a multi-purpose hangar like the carriers of the Pendergast-concept.
thus, the Cowen-Class still serves almost exclusively as a mobile base for squadrons from "Dahna Na", "Prato", " Dahratus" and "Miapi Dahratus"
due to its large transport box capacities, the Cowen-Class is still occasionally used as a supply ship, even though the CPF prefers the freighter version of the Ladon-Radim-Class cruisers for this purpose
repair capacities or even the possibility of being used as a tender/mobile dock do not exist for the Cowen class, repairs are only possible on the fighter squadrons
- Not every variant and new technology at that time was a success and went into series production, some were even only tried out on individual ships.
however, thanks to the robust construction of the Genii, ships of all version numbers are still active 78 years after the construction of the first Mk I Cowen class.
even if it is not planned this way, the variety of versions makes it harder for the Mandrillus to adapt to the Cowen-Class
because most versions are indistinguishable from each other when the weapon systems are retracted, Mandrillus commanders can ill-prepare themselves for what kind of resistance to expect from a Cowen class
