Description This is only significant because it's the first painting I did everything forβ€”I built the stretcher, stretched the canvas, primed the canvas, and painted it (of course).

This is absolutely stunning. The soft colors work beautifully with the abstract nature of it, it has a very dream-like quality

you're welcome
really? is it like each student got assigned different colours?? sorry, i'm just curious, i'm not an art student, i'm just wondering what's it like

It depends on your teacher, I guess. At the beginning of the year we just copied photos to study chroma and value and colour mixing. The hands were kind of a final project...everyone had the same assignment [so, everyone had to do a green hand] but we had to use the principles we learned before and put our own style into the work.

"oil on canvas"...
that does have a nice ring to it! ^-^ haha
this is cool! I think the hand outline could stand to be a little more promenent, though!

Hah, it always seemed like the best artists use oil on canvas. And I always wanted to try it. But now I realize it's a pain in the ass!

Thanks for the crit, too. It's more noticeable when you see it for real. Besides, this assignment was the first time we could be abstract, so I had to go a little crazy ;D

This one is my favourite. The other five that I'm done are in the studio [of those, only two are post-worthy ;D] and too wet to scan...oils take FOREVER to dry. I still haven't started the other two

Aw poo. Oils drive me nuts like that though. Even when they do eventually dry they still feel wet...to me at least. ...And oil paint generally hates me. ~__~

Did you get finger prints all over your paintings?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Oleem In reply to kyuketsuki45 [2008-12-05 21:10:47 +0000 UTC]

No Usually the paint isn't wet enough, or else if it is I just brush them out.

The bigger problem is when my mom touches my paintings when they aren't done

kyuketsuki45 In reply to Oleem [2008-12-05 23:57:38 +0000 UTC]

Way to go. A true painter. Looks real nice.

I think it would be cool if you made the hand look like glass. A few highlites with different tones of white would do it. Refract the image behind the hand a little. I don't know, what do you think?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Oleem In reply to Mafeo [2008-12-04 02:12:29 +0000 UTC]

Not a true painter quite yet ;D I still have three more levels of painting class!

Ah. That's a cool idea! The refraction sounds really difficult, though. I wish I'd thought of that sooner But, I'm pretty happy with it now, and don't have the time to fuck around with something I can hand in as completed. I have like a billion things due next week.

And you do have dainty hands!

I bought a premade canvas for my final project ;D If you don't get them too big it's definitely worth the price.

Hah. I have anorexic hands. Back in ninth grade I wore a ring on every finger...now, after years of dieting, they're all too big for me.

I would have some RPGs, but my brother sells them off after he's played them. Kingdom Hearts 2 is the least "jock-y" game I have, besides DDR.

Also keeping with the "don't show your face" motif.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 2

Oleem In reply to nose-dive [2008-12-06 23:57:31 +0000 UTC]

I would never let anyone sell my RPGs. I even kept most of my brother's. They're mine now!!! Hah!

Kingdom Hearts sucks D: I have the first one and think it's retarded, so didn't bother playing the second one; I assume the concept and gameplay are pretty much the same... I despise Square Enix. Why did they have to merge!? I have a few DDR games too, but it's a billion times better to just go to the arcade, even if that means you make a fool of yourself in public ;D

My camera fails so much more than yours. No fair. And it's kind of pointless for you to hide your face since I've already seen it! I think only...four people from dA have seen my face.

nose-dive In reply to Oleem [2008-12-07 00:18:59 +0000 UTC]

D; He's older though, and strongggg. Lucky girl!

I really liked them, but I'm a sucker for hack&slash and Disney. Money, woman, lot's of money is the only reason for a merger. Oh, I'm rather good at DDR, so I don't have to worry about mistakenly being a fool, bahahah.

Well, my family is really big on photography, and on getting a product that will last a long time, so I ended up with a GREAT Christmas present that makes up for the following years of getting the littlest things.

I feel so naked now!

Oleem In reply to nose-dive [2008-12-07 02:30:55 +0000 UTC]

My brother is older and stronger, but also apathetic, so it works out.

I thought KH was so pointless. I don't like Disney [the only Disney movie I've seen is the Lion King, and that was at least 10 years ago] and I feel like they just bastardized...er, included, the Final Fantasy characters so that the retarded fanboys/girls would buy the game. There was so much wandering around in each world that it was hard for me to follow the main plot. I found the battle system really, really annoying. The thing that finally made me quit is when I found enough dalmatians, it said I got the new spell, but I didn't actually get it! So I was stuck with shit magic forever. And the AI sucked. For hack&slash get Shining Force Neo. The plot and characters are absolutely ridiculous, but the battle system is incredibly addicting. Or Odin Sphere!!! omg, not quite hack&slash, but an amazingly fun battle system, great storyline and characters...could be the best game I've ever played. ...I told you I'm an RPG nerd

That's cool! My family is cheap and doesn't know anything about technology D:

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

nose-dive In reply to Oleem [2008-12-07 17:15:02 +0000 UTC]

You make me sad. Yeah, the original KH did have a lot of problems, after I look back on it, like the EXTENSIVE wandering around in each world, and in general, just how long it takes to do everything. I think KH2 fixed that problem, though, for the most part. The battle system was a bit sketchy, but KH2 spiced it up with a myriad of... strangely fulfilling mechanics. It's true, I think they added the FF characters just to appeal to another audience, but really I think we would've gotten it anyway. The prospect of kicking Sephiroth's ass was FAR too intriguing, though. The worst levels in that game were definitely Monstro, Deep Jungle, and Atlantica. If I have to see another talking crab, I'm gonna punch something.

Hahah, it's okay, my brother is a hardcore RPG kid, even trading old games for credit for new ones. But we live so far apart, he never really lends me anything.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Oleem In reply to nose-dive [2008-12-07 18:13:22 +0000 UTC]

What bugged me is that the battles never ended. It added to the endless wandering problem. Honestly, they needed more party members. I mean permanent party members, not just one from a specific world that you could temproraily recruit because it was better than Donald's continuous dying D: Heh, Monstro was one of the only places I could beat without gamefaqs [it bothers me to use gamefaqs, but KH pissed me off to no end and I couldn't figure out what was happening most of the time]...The only reasons I bought KH were because people said it was good, it was by Square Enix, and I thought the Final Fantasy elements would have had more importance than they did. Now I won't even touch anything by Sqaure Enix, and hope that future KHs won't ruin Zell D:

A hardcore RPG kid would keep every game ;D You still must get Odin Sphere, it's only $20 at Gamestop~

It's gorgeous; the flow from the focal point is really well done. The colour choices and placement makes it echo. Love it. Congrats on making everything yourself

Oleem In reply to versarnwen [2008-12-04 02:08:22 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! It wasn't a big canvas but I still feel like I accomplished something.

As for your comments on abstracts...it's something I find really difficult to explain. A lot of people think abstracts should be planned scrupulously but I find that doesn't work for me. You just have to trust your instinct [and practice. and be lucky.] It does help to start out with something, though. A palette, a mood or idea, or an object that you want to represent. And every so often I look at it from a distance to see how the composition is going and if it's moving the way I want.

I wanted this one to be very fluid...then decided it was ugly and added a lot of straight lines and rectangles into the space I'd already established. Then I still didn't like it, so I traced my hand over it and called it a day For me, it's just a matter of doing whatever moods strike me, layering them 'til I'm satisfied.
