'How did the old masters do it!' - Heh, never thought of bluring the inspiration pic, just studed it with a picсer. Thanx for the idea!

those are two different approaches
but I think it's more important to see the general first, then the particulars

GREAT!
This tut doesn't help total beginners, but it's perfect for further improvement!
FAV! (and saved for the future, when I'm able to draw like that )

Thanks! However,
I do believe that what I stated IS helpful no matter how technically good you are.
Everything related to values, "darker" and "lighter" stuff can be applied to photomanips, ink drawing, pencil drawing (this is where it comes from!) and to any other technique.

Yeah but from my own experience in epic failure , I know it's so difficult for a beginner to get anatomy correct, that you don't really have an eye for dynamic poses and composition
You're so relieved to have finally an anatomical correct sketch, that you don't bother for the dynamic of the pose anymore. In other words: You don't want to destroy the sketch anymore, after you put so much time into it...
But with more experience you slowly start paying attention to those things and then your tutorial is like GOLD

Really interesting thoughts that you're having. Thank you for sharing, I'll try to keep these points in mind, I'm sure one or another of them will also apply to my watercolours .
In any case, they work excellently for you!

every tip that has the keywords "value, lighter, darker" is applicable to painting.
value drawing comes first, then comes painting, because the painting is basically drawing, just with colour.

You're probably right… I'll try to keep it in mind .
Your attitude towards references is also pretty useful. It actually even comes close to how I'm handling them, I should pay attention to that from now on.

I'd be really happy if you ask if something is unclear for you, that could become a base for some future tutorial work (as well as just resolve some doubts for you and me, sure)

Up to know, I think I got your point. But maybe some questions will arise when I try to follow your tips in my own work, you can never know.

Very nice! I love to see tutorials about "how to art", rather than "how I art"... if that makes any sense.
Starting with your initial sketches, discussing the concepts behind the art instead of the "brushes" used, referencing the old masters and telling why it works the way it does... brilliant, and an excellent teaching method... and I do believe that's what a tutorial's for. I LOVE how you show multiple reference images, but the final image is NOT a copy of anything, but is your own work... if all art tutorials were like this, I think we'd have a much higher level of art from the noobs... and from me!
At least, we might have fewer new artists asking "What program do you use?" and more artists asking "What foundational concepts do you use to support your technical skills?"

Thanks a lot for the feedback! It means very much to me.
I try to distill these general principles from my own expirience, from what my teachers taught me and from the allmighty internets. I found out that they are few, and I still wonder why not every teacher as able to formulate them :S
