Iv'e been using the hard round brush with pressure sensitive opacity, and my paintings don't have that... er... textured painterly effect?
Best example I can think of is the hair line of your zoomed in example at step 5.

I use quite a few brushes, all collected from various free sourses on the net. Just seek for and try stuff to know what ones are the best for you personally.

I only have a year left before I'm tossed head first into the gaming industry-I really gotta get my paintings at a professional level or I can't put them in my demo reel :C Maybe I can learn something from watching you?

really REALLY! helpful in order to improve and put the focus on imortant things in future pictures... and just the thin i needed at my level somehow.
besides, talking of the kissing shapes etc, you brought inr really much old knowledge, theory and "rules" of painting, drawing or art in general... at least of the parts of it, that ought to be aesthetical!

Delightful to see a tutorial dealing with the real foundations of good picture making. You go through lot of stuff beginners often fail to think about. Using reference wisely is important and studying old masters can definately teach you soo much, especially about composition and design. Remember kids, if you f'up the initial composition and design phase, there's very little you can do to save your pic other than starting over.
