Description
For Round 3 (storytime)! For this round we were supposed to use a prompt from the list depending on the character's birthday (in Kevin's case it's April the 20th) and create a story based on that prompt. So... here goes! I wanted to write a Dickensian novel but I ran out of time!
Kevin always wanted to join his school am dram club but he never did it until his last year at school. The reason for that was that he was afraid he wouldn't be good enough, and that he'd never get good parts, and that he'd have to learn loads of lines and that would be too much work. Except when the club decided to put on The Lion King Kevin had to bite the bullet (and he knew all the words already anyway). His dad even made him a lion mane necklace (of sorts) for the audition (well, I'm saying "made", Kevin's dad actually tweaked an old costume that was probably supposed to be a flower) and Kevin got in and got Simba's part! Though later it turned out that everyone who signed up got a part and there was a different student playing each main character in every scene to keep it fair and square. And you didn't have to learn the lines that well. Or be that good at it. But hey, still fun, right?
And that's how Kevin ended up joining a club while wearing a colourful necklace.
This was my favourite round so far, but to be honest it was also the most challenging - with the previous rounds I had the benefit of them being clearly AU so I only had to make sure they make sense for the characters, but not figure out how they would fit into the overall story. But with this round I had the benefit of worldbuilding and possibly new characters ("possibly"... who am I kidding, they always stick around) and trying to work the prompts into the setting!
And now I can sit back and enjoy the ride! Well, not really, I have comics to draw but it is nice to be done with some time until the deadline.

Your entries always bring a smile to my face. The way you use color is so inspiring- I'm always in awe of the variety of colors, but more so how even with all the brights you use, the viewers' attention is instantly drawn to your main characters. And all those details! Gorgeous! Beautiful job and such a fun story too!

I love the whole story you have going on here.Β Kevin looks so happy!Β The attention to detail going on in the piece is astounding!Β Kevin's flower necklace looks lovely and the tiger stripes on his jacket are hilariously awesome.Β Plus that Pumba wheelchair cover is a great touch.Β

I think you rose to the challenge pretty darn well! I know Kevin is the focus here but I AM LOVING THAT PUMBAA CHAIR because it reminds me so much of seeing TLK on broadway and that's how his costume was done! I have a feeling that's 100% on purpose so good little reference there!
And as per usual I adore your colors. I gotta trade with you one day! I NEED ME SOME OF THAT.Β

Thank you! Yeah, I looked at broadway costumes and then school production costumes, and then just adapted it to how wheelchair-friendly costumes are often made (a cardboard frame over the chair and other stuff over that when needed)! Now I'm surprised I haven't seen a real Pumbaa chair (multiple Wall-Es though)!
I think we could learn from each other - you ARE good at colours when you do them, and I need to play around with limited colours and B&W more (I just really enjoy working in full colour but y'know, variety is a good thing)!

YES! Kevin seems to be enjoying himself here so much! I mean, he got to be Simba, that would make anyone excited! I love the story behind this as well Everyone taking turns as the main character in school plays should totally be a thing....I was stuck playing the evil witch when I did a school play xD Pfft! I really like the 'costume' choice for him though, it seems to just fit somehow and that mane is fabulous!! Amazing job as always

Thank you! Haha, it doesn't take much to get Kevin excited but yeaaah!
And I think schools should be about equal opportunities but then I'm also not sure how not to make it patronising when it's THAT fair and square (Kevin's school generally overdid it as many special schools seem to do).
And hey, lots of kids these days would LOVE to play an evil witch! IT'S LIKE AN EDGY TAKE ON HARRY POTTER

Yeah that's true Maybe for much younger kids then, since it seems they're being taught to be insanely competitive very early now
(and when i was growing up the same kids were chosen for all the lead roles and everything every year xD)
I was the witch from Into The Woods so I was like everyone's bad guy!! D; I would have loved to be an edgy witch from Harry Potter! It sounds much more fun muahahaha!

Yeah!! Letting everyone "win" is great for smaller kids, teens (and maybe preteens) need different approaches! I actually just read an article along the same lines.
And aw man, that must be tough at that age... I have no memories of being in school plays as a small kid (so either I wasn't in anything or had some ridiculously small parts, I was far from good at any sort of stage activities) but I have a very clear memory of my kindergarden teacher crossdressing as Santa. THE SHOW IS NOT OVER UNTIL THE BEARDED LADY SINGS!

Dude, you've drawn a lot of eye-catching stuff in the past that's reduced me into a mindless, gaping idiot, but this is definitely my new FAV. I love everything about this. The sheer variety of color and how they all blend together so seamlessly, all of the expressions, the poses, the wide range of emotion, the detail in their wheelchairs (again), the makeshift Pumba costume (I'M DYING), Β the fact that it's KEVIN (AGAIN) and he's in a RIDICULOUS OUTFIT (AGAIN). Seriously, that flower/mane is so beautiful and the story behind it is so great and painfully realistic, pffft. I just love him more and more.
Okay, but I'm seeing one smart/sassy character (and female to boot, so obligatory fem character = checkmark), one grumpy/eternally-reluctant character who always inexplicably seems to get himself dragged into the chaos, and one optimistic/happy-go-lucky character always doing his best to have a great time even in the worst of situations. Β WHERE IS THE TV SHOW. Think of the SHENANIGANS, OLY. The ZANY, hEART-WARMING, ofF-BEAT and ALWAYS AT LEAST 32% BAFFLING AND UNCOMFORTABLE FOR everYONE inVOLVed SHENANIGANS. I need this in my life yesterday.
Overall, 11/10.

Aww, thank you! You're too kind and also somehow know what to say so I think back to it when I feel guilty for being slow with comics and stuff, it reminds me to keep going and that someone out there is still enjoying it!
I'VE SEEN SO MANY WEIRD COSTUMES WHEN RESEARCHING FOR THIS None of exactly those costumes but a lot of wheelchair-friendly costumes are build of boxes/blankets over a wheelchair, so it made sense.
Since Kevin moved to Greater Manchester with the revamp I might have to start an arc with a special school THERE as well now! Though Kevin graduates the summer the story begins so I had MISSING ALL HIS FRIENDS and eventual further education planned for him buuut I could find an excuse to bring his old school up too! I'll definitely bring these new kids up either way (augh I need to decide on their names already - the 'Pumbaa' kid is either Thomas or Trevor I think)!
SO YEAH, SHENANIGANS INCOMING

AGGHGHGHHGG YES SHENANIGANSΒ Β !!!! Haha, honestly, I think anything involving Kevin I'd be totally down for, but you've definitely instilled some feelings about these two new guys and I'd love it if you did include them in some capacity. Like Trevor, I vote Trevor. Something about that name just screams... kid glaring off screen in a wheelchair dressed up to look like a warthog. Idk, it's just how I feel.Β

Oh, you know how it is, we all want to do this and that better and faster... But I won't pretend that your words aren't reassuring!
Yesss! I'm really tempted to draw everyone dressed up during Inktober this year, one character per day but I'll probably break down towards the end.
I am seriously considering the possibility of a second school in the story these days (this is a story that doooesn't eeeend ...) but then there are multiple other options as well! And I trust your gut feeling, Trevor he is then! Now to name the sassy girlΒ Β ...honestly she isn't VERY sassy but that seems closer than smart, at least when it comes to the typical idea of "smart". I started doodling them more so I'm hoping to have more OC random info to report soon - it's always faster to figure this stuff out when drawing them. Also it's summer, I want to draw everyone in summer clothes!

Making it so in every scene there's a new actor playing the main role actually sounds like something modern schools WOULD do to keep things fair.Β
The Pumbaa 'mask' is the best thing every, by the way. It caught me completely off guard for some reason!

I BLAME THE PARENTS It's a slightly more tricky subject when it comes to special schools, but I believe not patronizing someone should include not bullshitting them about this sort of stuff.
I'm slightly disappointed the Pumbaa mask/blanket didn't catch more people off guard - I've seen some spoooooky props, masks and face paintings while preparing for this picture! Design-wise Timon and Pumbaa definitely steal the show when it comes to this sort of stuff.

Oh my this one is so bright and fun! I like that contrast between Kevin's entry this round and Tessa's brussel sprout boots and all the blues
I did think he was a flower until I read the mini story and thought it was perfect for that one Lion King song that I think almost every kid ended up singing after watching...what a fantastic mane! I also just noticed the kid on the right in his warthog box outfit which is equally fantastic. I think my favourite part has to be that Kevin is in tiger print though! Truly embracing animal print
π: 0 β©: 1
Oly-RRR In reply to Sleyf [2016-06-20 03:20:15 +0000 UTC]
Thank you! I tried keeping both entries in a similar palette during the first round and it was a bit boring for the problem-solving part of my brain, so now I'm trying to try different things with these (which is what contests and prompts are for really, I think, learning something new)!
And haha, I wanted the costumes to have a hand-made feel about them - I sometimes like watching videos of school productions (and I saw a couple of TLK productions) and I think the most charming ones are not the ones that look like professional musicals but the ones where you can tell most costumes were made by the kids and half the actors are wearing regular clothes with some animal masks. I was trying to capture that sort of feel. So the stripy shirt was the most theme-appropriate shirt Kevin had at the time, I guess!
π: 0 β©: 1
Sleyf In reply to Oly-RRR [2016-06-22 08:44:22 +0000 UTC]
Yeah I think the divergence of palettes is really interesting and also atmospheric (the problem solving part of my brain died a long time ago lol *uses the same colour for everything*)
They look great, I love the pumba costume, it's really well made for a homemade costume but still looks homemade! I agree with you, it's much more fun with the amateur outfits that have more charm (which is basically mostly all school productions)
I just watched a video of my nephew's playschool production (he was a fireman) and all the home-made outfits haha
Well he got the right colour pants on!Β I do love the shirt though, it's a nice little touch to make it even more 'homemade'

Oly-RRR In reply to Sleyf [2016-06-23 19:27:57 +0000 UTC]
Oh come on, you're too hard on yourself! Though I sometimes feel like I'm reusing the same colour combos all the time too, this is why I try to push myself ...sometimes!
Aw yeah, a FIREMAN!! I keep meaning to add some firemen in Cop Story ...or at least pretend-firemen!
π: 0 β©: 1
Sleyf In reply to Oly-RRR [2016-06-23 21:22:31 +0000 UTC]
Lol but it's true, I need to do some problem solving exercises (just not math, more like, practical problem solving)
You have, what's the word, 'moxy'
There has to be a fireman somewhere! (My nephew went through a phase of Fireman Sam, which is the most boring cartoon ever, the old stop-motion Sam was waaay more interesting) but yeah, pretending to rescue 'the naughty boy' (that being, Norman, an irritating boy who quite frankly, should have been left unrescued many times) was a thing with him.
Someone needs to be a pretend fireman now, it must be! At a fancy dress...or something!

It's all so bright and colourful! Also, Kevin looks so happy, here.Β
I'm intrigued by how short and to the point the story is. Sometimes, the prompt doesn't need more than a couple of lines for the story to work and make perfect sense.
Also, Kevin turned up 15 minutes to late to be OC #10 to arrive on my "First 10 OCs picture" (currently about halfway done). Sorry about that, Kevin, but I have to admit... I'm relieved not having to do your super complicated wheelchair.

Thank you! And yeah, FINALLY!
And I thought it was strange how short the story story part ended up too, especially after Tessa!
Haha, I was wondering if you were going to do that crazy lineup this round but then I realised we didn't have 10 characters yet (at that point)! I'd probably feel guilty if you had to draw both Kevin and Tessa at the same time when I haven't done any OCP group picture yet (I've been thinking of it lately but I think I'll do it around the time my OCs don't get to the next round so I'll have more time on my hands) - but that doesn't mean that Kevin won't try to sneak in early sometime in the future!
π: 0 β©: 1
Gwennafran In reply to Oly-RRR [2016-06-19 21:02:15 +0000 UTC]
Hahaha, by now it also takes quite a few hours to make, and I kinda prioritized Laila's entry first. But yeah, I was wondering if I'd end up having to submit with only 9 (not waiting for the last one), when two entries arrived at almost the same time. Honestly, though... People are so late submitting overall these last rounds, it's crazy!
Also, nothing to feel bad about, I'm choosing to do this, and people don't owe me anything for it. + there's 3 instances of "two OCs from one creator" already this round. You certainly wouldn't be alone, had you been 20 minutes faster submitting.Β
I have to say, though, it was a really interesting challenge to convert Tessa into my style. And figuring out her body posture. O.o
π: 0 β©: 1
Oly-RRR In reply to Gwennafran [2016-06-20 03:13:26 +0000 UTC]
I think part of it is the summer - even if people don't get more busy they usually change their routines in early summer. But yeah, I meant to get both entries done early and upload Kevin's entry a couple of days after Tessa's but things just kept coming up... I do like getting things done early, it just rarely happens.
And I know you're choosing to do this but still - I really admire that sort of community activities, and I wish I do gift art more often than I do, but again, I am slooow. So doing something for the group is definitely on my list... But yeah, ONE day Kevin might be faster!
But yeah, that's a good attitude when it comes to drawing different body postures (or wheelchairs for that matter) - it's just drawing something you haven't drawn before, same as I haven't drawn it at some point, same as learning to draw anyone and anything else! Ehehe, looking forward to the lineup (and all the entries that should soon rush in!), that goes without saying.
π: 0 β©: 1
Gwennafran In reply to Oly-RRR [2016-06-20 07:43:19 +0000 UTC]
I think it was made extra long this time to account for finals as well. But honestly, a lot of people tend to start entries at the last minute, so the longer they have to do the art, the longer before the entries start to show up.
Well, people work the way they work. You obviously use a lot of time on your entries, and with two characters it's understandable that it's hard to find time for more than that.
Honestly, the most annoying OC of the bunch is Kat and that super detailed wedding dress. And last round I had to redo Laila's overly complicated dress. I'm sabotaging myself! *LOL*
π: 0 β©: 1
Oly-RRR In reply to Gwennafran [2016-06-20 20:50:48 +0000 UTC]
Yeaaah! I mostly like longer rounds - everyone finds some time to fit entries in without too much stress but then you are right and some people do put it off for as long as possible. But I guess it also means better entries because there's time to think it through. I was initially worried about the pageant taking over my time like Miss OC did but the way it is now I can easily imagine doing it every year (at least the way things are now)!
Hahaaa, we are all harder on our own characters! I obviously don't mind drawing wheelchairs in general (and actually power wheelchairs are easier to draw than manual wheelchairs since most of the construction is hidden) but I sometimes get that sort of moments in general, 'oops I'm going to regret that design decision...' Aw well, we still love 'em!
π: 0 β©: 1
Gwennafran In reply to Oly-RRR [2016-06-21 08:38:58 +0000 UTC]
I've seen enough things with deadlines to know a very large percentage of people won't start until the last minute, though. It doesn't *really* seem to matter if we got 10 weeks or 3 weeks to a lot of this years contestants. They apparently won't start the deadline is right around the corner anyway. :/
I mean, some people obviously take advantage of the time given (you being a good example), but... Most really doesn't.
Hehehe, that's how I feel whenever one of my really detailed clothing designs turns out to be among the first 10 OCs. Dammit! What was I thinking? XD
π: 0 β©: 1
Oly-RRR In reply to Gwennafran [2016-06-23 00:58:55 +0000 UTC]
Yeaaah... I guess in an indirect way it's also a judging criterion since when people leave stuff until last minute they run the risk of not doing it at all. I think everyone is here for the fun rather than *winning* but I always got the impression that most OC event dropouts happen in the "middle" rounds, maybe it's people starting to get bored.
But I dunno, I still feel guilty about being slow often enough. LIKE WITH THE PAGE I'M COLOURING TODAY...
π: 0 β©: 1
Gwennafran In reply to Oly-RRR [2016-06-23 08:05:29 +0000 UTC]
Oh, simply showing up definitively can be a way to advance a lot of rounds (I especially suspect it'll turn out crucial this round considering the current turn-up. We're still only on 11 OCs).
And I agree, this especially happens in the middle rounds. People are usually really motivated in round 1, and somewhat motivated around round 2. Then comes the middle rounds, where stuff just comes up and folks will drop out because they lose interest, the rounds are too hard or real life just gets in the way. Around the final rounds you're down to the ones that will hand things in pretty much every round, and OCs no longer "don't show up".Β
And hey, I'm pretty much dependent on deadlines to ever get things done. XD
