The rail was there to attach a laser sight or some other type of targeting system. The second one already has that stuff built in.

Personally one of the ways I judge how awesome a gun is - is by imagining how useful it would be in either
A) The zombie apocalypse
B) The Battle for Helm's Deep (from The Lord of the Rings movies.. am I the only one who's ever imagines having all these awesome guns and going nuts there??!?!)

XD you take a minigun back 300 years, and you could wipe out an entire Imperial British army by yourself. Everyone's conveniently standing in a line.
