Description
It sits on the table in a puddle of light,Its cap burning up in blazes of blue.
It spits and it sputters and it sparks
And it shines, all the time smoking,
And flaming and flaring.
Its tears melt down its slim, smooth body,
Cooling and freezing and fusing like glass.
It sits vigil in the dark and illuminates the world,
A sentinel statue that wards off the cold vast void.
No caliginous mists will brave this house,
While it stands firm, guardian brave.
Prometheus has brought the fire,
From the mountains of Olympus to
The hands of men.
Out of wax and lead they made you, then,
To light their way when the road is dark.
You last but an hour,
And then you flicker and fade
and the black mist curls in again.
