Carl and Clementine were almost to the shore of Jonespeak ridge, but Abner was waiting for them, what's more he head Juliet with him, she was his ticket out of here alive.

Carl and Clem gave pursuit, and Carl turned the corner to late to duck, and Juliet's cries did not make it to his ears in time. He remembered hearing a ringing, and feeling a ringing through out his entire face, not being able to stand, and falling into something soft he realized was Clem's arms , and the noise he now heard was her stammering "no" over and over.

Also, he felt like something was covering his right eye, only both his hands were limp at his side, so why couldn't he...?

Abner was so distracted by his revenge, and apparent victory...and the cries of his hostage, that he did not hear someone approaching behind him in the deluge.
