Description Sketch: Pencil on 90 lb paper using 6b to 7h leads.
I was sitting in a provincial park on a Saturday afternoon in downtown Shanghai last October(2010)when I drew most of this. I was really trying to capture the detail of the wood and the reflection and movement of the water below - not easy for me. The dock, especially took quite a while to detail - around 4 hours total just for that.
Photo Model: Jessica Nolan(Thanks - as always)

WHOA! This is awesome! I've tried my hand with landscapes EXACTLY like this at our cottage, but it isn't nearly as good XD

I love the water, and the wood, and everything! That's really good! Even those little screws on the deck's planks are detailed ^^ Really good!!!

Thank you, Sarah. But I will give you a little lesson in perspective, and a critique of my own work. I drew while sitting in a park in downtown Shanghai, China, at a time when I was still very much a novice artist. While the detail may have been well rendered, the dock's angle is "too flat" when compared with the angle of the subject. Yes - the dock is supposed "flare out" and widen as you go from the bottom to the top of the page, but the "flare" is too dramatic, making it appear a little 2-dimensional.
I'm glad you like it though ... I almost went blind drawing all those little woodgrains!

Ha! Yeah, I totally get it. We (my family) have a cottage bordering a small, beautiful lake and I sat on the bench trying to draw our dock with water and all, but I used blotchy markers and I had trouble with the water (you know, the wave crests and stuff :/ LOL) And the dock, like yours, got a bit 'dramatic' in size near the top. I didn't have a ruler on me; just a my hands and a clipboard with utensils ^^ It was fun, but landscapes are definitely not my 'forte' xD So praise yourself! That drawing was great! I'm sure you've come quite a long way though ^U^ Especially seeing that drawing of the model in that building. That was epic xP

Send me a picture of the actual cottage ... it sounds beautiful! Maybe I can help you with it. Remember ... when trying to illustrate texture like water ... what you DON'T draw is just as important as what you DO draw. Negative space is VERY critical to texturing and lighting. Many artists tend to "overdraw" when they are beginners. More is not necessarily better ... and that applies to any form of art! Keep working hard at it and never stop learning!
Thank you!!!

Inspirational! LOL. But it's not the cottage I'm drawing, it's the dock and water. I'll have to find a picture of a good shot of the water. I've got tons on my other computer. I'll have to see into that. Have a nice day! :3

Your line work is second to none. Seriously. It's bold and stands out. There's a distinct lack of it in this art community and I for one am glad to see someone just jumping into it full force. Love it.

Hard to say thank you when you're stunned by comments like this. It is an honor to be able to share these works and a greater honor to have someone enjoy them this much. After all - that's a big part of why we do this, right? Again - many, many thanks - I still get overwhelmed when an artist as experienced as yourself takes the time to raelly study my work!

As with everyone, I learn from others such as yourself and I've a long way to go. Studying other's work just adds to my own knowledge as well getting my art fix It's all about the character and obvious passion an artist has. The more enthusiasm, the more I enjoy the piece. You've got the enthusiasm! Thats what I miss from art school; being around others that have that drive to create, to make something out of nothing and be hyped up about it. You've got that.

No doubt, my friend. I could not have put it better myself. I think the key to all of it is to remove one simple word from your vocabulary - "can't". Once you do that - your view on just about everything changes for the better.

Something I need to remember in my own life, outside of art. Wise words always.

Reading your poems - especially the one you just posted kind of hits home when I see this work. Jess Nolan was actually a good friend of mine who was wonderful enough to agree to model a few photos for me. She's actually the model in both of these works and several others I have posted. Once her girlfriend found out what we were doing - all hell broke loose and I unfortunately had to walk away from it. Amazing how narrow minded and childish people can be, and it's ironic that it always seems to be the people who profess themselves to be "visionaries" and "free thinkers" that are the most ignorant. In any case it was wonderful while it lasted and I am thankful for that. SAnd I am thankful that you like it! :joy:

I'm glad that it relates to you somehow because I do write things to express and get it out of my head, but also so there is that bit of connection with others...even those I haven't had the pleasure to meet. Its a shame if it brings out more painful memories, but I'm glad that theres a way you can directly relate. That really means something.
