Description The cloak!

[january.13.2011]
[1] The fabric for the cloak
[2] The fabric for the cloak hanging on the wall c':

[january.19.2011]
[3] Drew the designs on with chalk, still need to adjust the design slightly

[january.29.2011]
[4] Doing a test-run of wearing what has been made so far. I'm really liking it, but I'll have to get used to having so much skin exposed.

[april.10.2011]
[5] Thanks to my amazing boyfriend ~Hoyashi , we finished painting the back of the cloak! (Although the picture was taken before we had finished painting...)
We worked on it for around 6 hours straight this weekend.
After the back of the cloak was finished drying, we flipped it over and started the inside of the cloak. I've used two bottles of black spray paint, and it's still not quite dark enough, but it's close.
We've started on the hood (figuring out how to attach it, were to put the slit on the top and the gromets, etc.) and we hope to have it attached to the cloak itself on Tuesday.

[april.26.2011]
[6] The fully painted back of the cloak!
The whole cloak is now completely sewn together, hood, sleeves 'n all. I just need to paint the hood and the sleeve, and spray paint the dark teal into the inside, and we're all set!
[7] The hood and the crown pieces. All I'm missing is the two wooden doles that go through the two grommets and behind the crossbar.
Because the wig piece I got is too curly (and not quite the same colour, although really close), my aunts were saying I should just feed my own hair through a hole in the back of the hood and style it. It sounds like that is currently the plan.

No, we didn't have a pattern. We basically just used the character model, where she is standing static with her arms up at shoulder-height, and scaled it up. My aunt is a master seamstress, so she is the one who did the sewing. It was a bit of trial-and-error without any sort of pattern, so we tried several different ways using an old sheet or whatever to figure out how to make the sleeves and attach the hood comfortably.

For the painted pieces, I used that same character model and used a projector, factoring in any differences in the cloak to make up for my lack of height compared to Midna.

It is the first (and only) cosplay I have ever done, or even attempted. Depending on your knowledge, I think it is all up to the individual if you are able to do it or not. I know I would never have gotten it done even half as well if I were to try and sew it myself..

Sorry, I guess that wasn't really the answer you were looking for.. haha But it's the best I can offer.

If you have any other questions about how we made this cosplay, don't hesitate to ask! I'll help you out as best I can. c':

No, thank you so much you have provided me with some much needed information! I was actually thinking the same thing with the cloak, with taking like sheets and stuff lol I honestly think I can do anything I can put my mind to and although the outcome may be slightly different than what I pictured in my head, In the end I'm still proud of what I did, Thanks so much for your info!

Did you want me to upload some more detailed shots of the cloak? Like how/where the sleeves and cloak are attached?

Sorry!! It's been a month, I didn't even realize!! With work, Christmas, making Christmas gifts, and a ton of other things, I kept putting it off. And then my boyfriends parents needed my camera, and I went on vacation out of town.. omg..

Excuses aside, I just got back in to town, got my camera back, am done making Christmas gifts, and am still on vacation! So I'll take those pictures for you tomorrow when the sun is out. haha

Did you want me to post them all on here, or e-mail them to you? :'D

You're doing so well with this! The designs are so clean; could you please tell me what you painted them with? I'm working on a Midna of my own, you see

omnomphenomenonArt In reply to Electrosa [2011-04-25 15:45:21 +0000 UTC]

Thank you kindly~
I used Tulip brand matte soft fabric paint. It dries flat, is really flexable, and looks clean. I did about three to five layers to get such a clear white. I got a 4oz (118mL) bottle, and I've used it on both the skirt and the cloak, and I still have quite a bit left. I suggest using really thin layers, because it takes less paint the way.

Hope I answered your question well enough. Any more, just let me know!

omnomphenomenonArt In reply to CloakVindermill [2011-04-11 14:32:28 +0000 UTC]

Thanks!
The skirt is all done, we just have to sew closed the bottom. I have to paint and attach the belt to the skirt, too. We got the shirt pretty much all sewn together, I just have to show her how the stomach needs to look, and I have to paint the sleeves when she's all done.. ummm We got all the make up aside from the skin paint, the forehead/crown piece is completely finished.. We're gonna attach the hood and possibly the sleeves on Tuesday, and then I need to paint them. I also need to spray paint in the dark teal designs on the inside of the cloak.
I completely forgot until last night that I have to make the hair cuff thingy.
And other than dying and cutting my hair, that's everything! (aside from anything I missed...)
We're sooo close to being finished!

Walk around as Sebastian, work as one of the Butlers in the Maid Cafe as Sebastian (One HELL of a butler indeed), bought a plush tentacle, a fox hat and a Male Yukata for $10 (which goes to the relief fund).

Yes, I do.. I don't like having my picture taken, so doing this costume and wearing it to a place where a lot of people will see me is a great challenge for me. If I can get a good enough picture I may actually post it -scared-
That is epic.. I would love to do that XDD

I take it you're not outgoing. Damn, that'll cost me some points on your journal quiz lol.

Shika-chan, you're cosplay's coming along very nicely, I think ppl will love your Otakon photos. Plus it's hard to get an embarrassing picture. Just know your limits (like don't try to do a handstand or a fire breathing show) and you'll be fine. Besides, everyone embarrasses themselves at a Con, just google "cosplay" and "carmeldansun" at the same time XD

haha Thanks, you're extremely encouraging~
My boyfriend has been trying for the past year to get my confidence level up, so this festival and cosplaying at it and taking pictures will be a huge step for me. I'll just need to take a huuuge breath, and not try to do the "carmeldansun" dance XDD

My gf is exactly the same. She's gonna be Saria, and she's a little nervous of ppl asking for her picture and being looked at a lot, but I'm helping her through it. XD

I love her XD

And I need to teach her to do the Carmeldansun dance. She'll probably think it' stupid and has no point, yet this is the same person that spontaneously sings Winnie the Pooh. XD

The ACT is a test that is a parallel to the SAT, an ability test that lets colleges know your academic skill set.

And no worries! She gets out of the test at 1, so my mom can drive her over to the Con right after!

Awesomesauce! Can you play anything on it?
I remember when I went to OtaFest a couple years ago, there was a long hallway that turned a few times that had no windows, and the lighting was kind of bad. I was walking through to meet up with a friend, and then I heard a quiet sound, which I realised was someone playing a song, which I realised after a few moments it was a song from Ocarina of Time. I turned the first corner, no one was there. By the time I turned the second corner, I could see this darkly robed figure haunched over at the very end of the corridor sitting on a bench in the shadows, playing "Lost Woods" at a really, really eerie tune.. 'Twas freaky. ;A;

Well, I know how to play recorder flute, so it wasn't a hard transition. Actually the way you put your fingers horizontally also reminds me of a guitar neck (which is my best instrument), so I am able to play it faster and more accurately than I can with a recorder.

Thank you for the compliments!

Oh yea, I saw your other video, of you playing the guitar. Sounds awesome
I'm terrible when it comes to working with both my hands.. I can play the piano, but I stumble soo much when I try to do both the left hand parts and the right hand parts at the same time.. I am envious of those of you who can play the guitar, flute, etc..

Of course! You are very welcome!

You saw the song of Kojitsu? Thank you, I composed it myself (the sheet music is on my dA profile if you're curious).

I can also use my guitar for epicness, here's my best private performance: [link]

I can't read sheet music, but I shall check that out!

aahaha I am extremely jealous--you two are amazing! How long have you been playing for? :'D
I think the only song I can play on the piano that can compare to that speed is "La Petit Chien" by I believe Chopin?
