Description "Pulsing veins were outlined briefly in the stretched membrane of her wings. Then, like dye spilled in water, colour flowed through them. Her wings went from transparent to translucent to a rich sparkling blue,...but the word 'blue' had taken on a new meaning in the brilliance of her scales." - Robin Hobb , The Mad Ship.

Closeup of the face & egg .

Created for Fantasy I: Dragons @ Worth1000

Created entirely in Photoshop CS2 using a few lizards, frogs, iguanas, newts, bats, snakes, a snow leopard and a very bad tempered camel.

Sweet! THAT IS AWESOME! I love the way you managed the scale details on the dragon.

I wish they real. I'd want one as a pet.

im confused, is it real (as in statue) or is this an amaaaazing picture or is it a 3D thing on computer

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Onanymous In reply to Willow141 [2007-09-17 08:33:10 +0000 UTC]

It's not a statue or a 3D rendering, it's just photomanipulation.
I took lots of different photos of reptiles and other animals and combined them in Photoshop to form my dragon.

Thats very realistic the lighting match up is spot on the only thing that slightly spoils it is the dragons head but its nothing major. Good job

utherdoul [2007-02-21 02:14:07 +0000 UTC]

This is probably the most "realistic" dragon image I've seen. It makes it so much more convincing when it's done with photomanipulation. It must've taken a great deal of time to choose the stock images and arrange them together, but it really paid off...

Did you win the competition?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Onanymous In reply to utherdoul [2007-02-21 06:04:16 +0000 UTC]

Actually, no.
I came second, but the winner was pretty awesome, so I didn't mind too much.

Finding the right sources is just as important (and time-consuming) as doing the actual manipulation.
I ran out of time when finishing this one (procrastination is a terrible thing!), so there is quite a few things I still want to fix up, mostly lighting and background related. I might even get round to it some day.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Onanymous In reply to bobbijp60 [2007-02-15 08:37:02 +0000 UTC]

Nope. Every single part of it was spliced together in Photoshop.

For instance, the face: the mouth comes from a gecko, the nostrils from a camel, the eye from a snow leopard and the scales and spikes from various other lizards and iguanas.

I gotta say up front that this photomanipulation fantasy piece is TRULY good!! And I love how you made the dragon, its translucent wings, and the egg as well, and also how you placed this creature in such a fine setting to make it look real, fantasy-style the way it should be!!! !

An excellent piece of work if I do say so myself, Onanymous!!! !

I've just started reading "Mad Ship," though I met Tintaglia in The Tawny Man trilogy (yes, I've read them out of order, but once I finished The Farseer Trilogy, I had a very difficult time getting into "Mad Ship," so I read the Tawny Man trilogy and now am very much looking forward to the Liveship Traders trilogy.) I love the quote you've included in your description, though I haven't reached that part in the book yet. I uploaded my own Tintaglia image earlier today and find it wonderfully strange and coincidental to have stumbled upon yours, which is magnificent.

... And I think perhaps I've had too much caffeine today.

Yes, I'm looking forward to "meeting" Amber, knowing what I know about the Fool. Those few scenes in The Tawny Man trilogy where Fitz eavesdropped on "Amber" and Jek ignited an interest in the Liveship Traders trilogy that I'd previously lacked.

Onanymous In reply to skellorg [2007-01-02 12:38:52 +0000 UTC]

Thank you so much!
I actually started with the Liveship Trader trilogy, before discovering the Farseers. That meant that I had to read it a second time before actually figuring out the connection between Amber and the Fool.

This dragon isn't really the Tintaglia of the books (she's much too small for that)
I just really liked the description of her colour, and tried to recreate something of it here. However, I do think her facial expression and protectiveness towards her young could be quite similar.
