Description Been working on the graphic novel portions for Vahni's story, and this scene really stuck out to me! It's shortly after she finds out she's the Avatar, and it's the first scene from Book 2! I pasted the scene summary below, but feel free to skip it!

It was nearly half-past dawn. Everyone laid asleep in the newly established dwelling Councilman Rohan allowed us to stay in. It had a gorgeous view of Republic City below, yet it felt too surreal. Not nearly in the best of ways as it should have. I'd found myself tossing and turning for hours in my bed, not once getting an ounce of sleep. There was nothing that could've kept my mind from buzzing with the thousands of thoughts that encircled within.

How could someone like me be the Avatar? A girl from a small village? Someone who's family once tried to kill the Avatar in my past life? It couldn't have made any sense. Not to me, not to anyone.

My thoughts pressed on to guide my feet over the edge of the bed and toward the window to pull it open, letting in the soft, chilled breeze from the outside. As if it'd clear my head, it didn't do the sorts. Instead, it pressed my gaze and thoughts toward the familiar city. It was almost bewildering to me to have the knowledge that only close to a hundred years before, I'd saved this city. Not in technicality myself, but Korra had. And before her Aang had founded this safe haven.

A pounding in my head followed, one that had been reoccurring for a few days. It was like my head was trying to force memories in that had been washed away somehow. Instead, all that followed was a strong sense of déjà vu and the strange tangy taste of egg custard. I didn't even like egg custard.

I had to swiftly trudge myself toward the small desk pressed against the wall, switching on the lamp near me to find my family photos strung about. The ones I'd managed to salvage from my previous village after my mother's imprisonment. Most of them were old family photos of relatives I didn't know the names to. One in particular caught my eye. A tattered piece of what looked to be a painting of a regal family. There sat a man with a face I knew all too well, a woman I didn't recognize, and two children: A boy and a girl.

I knew instantly it was my great-great grandmother, Princess Azula. Her resemblance to my mother was uncanny. However, I hadn't known the name of Azula's mother. It was said to be forbidden to speak of her, if you asked my mother. Beside her sat Fire Lord Zuko.

With only a momentary glance, I tucked the photo aside, a swelling sensation followed in my stomach as I pulled up the next one. It was my father, mother and I when I was eight. Right before he was sent off to the war. The hope had all but faded to thinking my father was alive. He'd gone missing in action somewhere in the Earth Kingdom during the battle, no one had heard from him since.

Something in my stomach churned, almost making me want to topple over in pain. What if I'd known I was the Avatar back then? Would it have saved my father from the war? What if I'd been able to prevent the war? Even though I was so young, what if there had even been the slimmest chance? A thought like that would ware me down. I'd never hear the end of it from my own mind.

DISCLAIMER: I don't own the rights to the background of the image, I used a screencap from the official show of Avatar the Legend of Korra since I'm terrible at drawing backgrounds. I don't own the rights to the Avatar Franchise, it belongs to Bryan and Mike. This is a fan-made continuation of the Avatar Cycle. However, Vahni belongs to me.
