Description
With finals/assignments rolling my way in a few weeks, I don't have much time for full-scale art, so enjoy some sketches, if you will. ^^Here's practicing the TFA style with the concept sketches of the Protectobrothers, since they're the guys my new OCs hang around a lot.
Streetwise, Blades, First Aid, Groove and Hotspot.
That said, Groove's design may be overkill, but dayyum, I love it.
Scrapped after I have it inked/finalized.

How do you usually play his character? Just to get some inspiration. I've always got him in mind as this no-nonsense leader type who isn't afraid to bang a few heads (usually Blades and Groove's since they get on his nerves often with bickering) to get a point across. Plus, since I once drew his human form as a rather stern-looking African-American male, yeah. He's got Samuel L.Jackson's voice in my head. XDXD

To be honest, I usually play him as the eldest of his "Protecto-siblings," if you will; he has to keep a firm hand and an even keel. Like you say, he isn't afraid to bust heads (my HS once literally bashed two arguing characters' heads together to get them to shut up; our Blades informed him that THAT was why HE was the boss XD). At the same time, he cares very deeply for his brothers and will dispense Big Blue Firetruck-bot Hugs when needed and occasionally, depending on his sobriety, when they're not. XD
Also, as it makes sense to me in my head, he looks up to Optimus Prime as a role model for himself, as a leader, soldier, and friend. This is, of course, a G1-centric RP, so a TFA!Hot Spot might have a different role model (perhaps Ultra Magnus, or maybe even TFA!Oppy Prime, if your HS is young enough).
Also also, while a Samuel L. Jackson voice is REALLY tempting for a big guy like Hot Spot, I can't help but hear Dan Gilvezan's HS in my head when my HS talks. *shrug* Maybe it's the Spider-Man-esque qualities I seem to have put in him - bravery, selflessness, compassion, and, on occasion, a biting sense of humor.

I'm sort of stumped at how to portray the head actually. For that matter, whose head is Defensor actually using? or is it some meld of parts?

In the original toy hot spot had two heads, his regular hot spot head and another, bigger one that you could flip up to make defensor's head. Beyond that, ya got me.
The only actual gestalts in TFA are Jetfire and Jetstorm, and each of them actually had half a head in their robot bodies that could combine.
