In the earlier episodes, Squidward was a bit of an arrogant jerk, but in the newer episodes, he's not really a jerk at all, but more of an average joe trying to get on with his life.
And if you think about it, he doesn't really hate SpongeBob or Patrick; it's their immature behavior is what he hates.
Do you think it's possible that Squidward himself is immature? He's acted as such in a few episodes.
If Squidward is immature, this would explain why he hates SpongeBob and Patrick because he actually hates himself for not achieving more in his childhood, and SpongeBob and Patrick's carefree lives reminds Squidward of his wasted youth and wants it back to make more out of himself than he has. Does that make sense?

That would also clearly explain those very rare moments where he actually starts having fun alongside Spongebob and Patrick, one of those "I've never felt so alive" moments! But then he goes so over the top and out of control that even Spongebob and Patrick grow concerned;
Spongebob: Squid's taking this really far, don't you think?
Patrick: Nah, he's only next door.
And it's probably safe to assume that he still talks down to everyone else
Spongebob: (mocking Squidward) "Everybody's an idiot except for me"
Squidward: "Well it's true."
which could be more cause for anger, that he's lying to himself so much and he knows it, just to cover up the fact that a lot of what he wants in life is far different than reality. Also simply the fact that he's seen alongside Plankton as one of the biggest losers in Bikini Bottom.

It does make sense that Squidwards lies to himself like that.
You know how he seems to lie and/or exaggerate to others about his worth? I think he's actually trying to convince himself about his own self-worth, which is what everybody does. We live in a society that demands perfection and anything below that is unwelcome and shamed upon.
It wouldn't surprise me if Squidward secretly has depression (like everyone else).
