Description
Ink, tech pen, micron, brush & ink, airbrush (ink wash)14x14"
nods to a Secessionist poster (artist unknown), Roger Dean & the changeable late November weather in the mountains of West Virginia
One of those drawings where the dialogue was the drawing saying nope nope nope nope until I substituted the hawk for what I initially wanted to go in that space. Drew the hawk "just to see" and the drawing spoke- "there you go"- the hawk went down like it belonged there. Rather than try to impose my will, I listened to the drawing.
The original idea came from a drive from Maryland to Kentucky to see my sister over Thanksgiving & a mix of music I've made for myself. I have a few other ideas brooding/incubating...stay tuned.
And yes- it seems like forever. Shoulder surgery immobilized my shoulder for a month. Then another month of PT until I could actually use the arm. Then a month feeling a little blocked...then finally!

I love your choice of lines and textures! They all make a lovely piece. I'm glad you were able to finish it even after surgery and block!

I love the mix of stippling with large white and black forms.
The tan really helps set everything into place. What is it? Brown ink? Air brush?

Thank you...The toned bits are watered down are black Koh-I-Noor drawing ink- watered down enough it gives you that warm tone...applied with my faithful, ancient Paasche-H airbrush.

Okay, this is amazing. I nearly hemorrhage whenever I pick up permanent medium like ink, because I almost inevitably botch something, but this is really something else, I mean how long did you spend on all that flipping stippling? It must have taken an absolute age! This is really something special right here, it looks like it could come alive any moment, like an old animated film.

Wow! Thank you!
I'm gonna guess it took about 3-4 days working 5-12 hours...and...a confession...I didn't stipple the whole thing...there's another technique- scumbling that I sometimes use- tiny little scribbles to create texture...density determines shapes...

hey no need to sound to apologetic, it's not as if you tried to trick anybody, I just didn't look closely enough. I haven't heard of that technique before, or at least not that I remember, it sounds like a bit of a compromise between stippling and cross hatching, and looks like it captures some of the best of both too. I'll have to give it a go sometime

I love this. And thank you for sharing a bit about your process. I know what you mean about listening to the drawing. Sometimes it takes a while for them to speak up!

thank you very much...it's kind of a return to how I worked years ago (I quit because it destroyed/damaged a nerve in my thumb). Doesn't hurt so much now...guess I'm more relaxed.

Thank you very much! Was shooting for a Secessionist feel, & they in turn were very influenced by Oriental art (Japonisme).

Shoulder inflamed from the stipple? I've come to understand the problem with my arm is a compressed ulna nerve... not carpal tunnel...

no...shoulder is something entirely separate- arthritis, an impingement that was bad enough to shred my biceps tendon, which ruptured. I had surgery, which included re-attaching the biceps tendon. They don't reattach it where it tore, they do it lower. The results are the bicep is better, but not the same. They did a ton of cleaning out, smoothed out the shredded surface of my rotator cuff...but left- a partial tear in my labrum & two small tears in the cuff.
Nah, pointillism/stippling killed the nerve in the tip of my thumb. Well, didn't kill it, any prolonged drawing, but especially stippling, that nerve comes screaming to life.
And thank you. Got a new drawing with the same(ish) theme & motifs brewing. All I gotta do is step away from this effin computer.

Nice to see your works up again!
Very good use of black and white, love the silhuouette trees, and the sixties style clouds too

Thank you! Great to be actually producing again. I have a few more ideas along these lines...
...my 60s style clouds are actually 1900 Vienna Secession style clouds...but a lot of the posters & album covers of the 60s borrowed, or outright stole, art nouveau images. The iconic Grateful Dead image of the skeleton & roses was a total rip off of an illustration done for "The Rubiayat of Omar Kayam"-

I'm just happy to be, uh, borrowing from the same sources as the artists who gave me so much joy when I was younger I love those old rock posters!

Great style concept, i'll be interested to see where you go with it next.
I agree whole hartedly with your love of the older art styles, modern art styles seem to me to just be the lazyest possible ways to do things. its evident everywhere, lower quality art across the board.. Compare an old winnie the pooh/cat in the hat book to a new pepper pig/dora the explorer book and its enough to make you get the shot gun out lol

Thank you very much. Shoulder's doing great- except for limitations on what I should attempt to lift, life almost back to normal. I swam 2000m meters yesterday (about half what I swim in a workout with my masters group). My goal is to be ready to rock in Sept...meaning rejoin the group & hopefully the same lane...
And keep producing artwork.
